The Llano Economic Development Corporation is eager to get the public involved in its vision for a first-class, multi-purpose event center on CR 303, in the southeast corner of Llano. Of Llano’s many historic structures, probably only the county courthouse is more impressive and historically important than the old Red Top Jail, which looms high above the Llano River just a block east of the square. The solid granite building, with its striking architecture and trademark red roof, was built in 1895 by the Pauly Jail Building and Manufacturing Co.

With hot, dry weather predicted for the foreseeable future, the Llano County Commissioners Court voted unanimously to reinstate the burn ban, effective Monday,

Sixth-grade students at Llano Junior High School have transformed into energy efficiency experts, committing to making simple changes at home that will lower energy consumption, save money, and reduce their impact on the environment. One hundred sixtyseven sixth-graders from Shirley Goerdel’s and Fraser Smith’s science classes participated in the Power- House™ energy investigation program, sponsored by the City of Llano and Central Texas Electric Cooperative (CTEC).

The coach’s wedding plans did not offer a distraction for the Llano Ladies’ basketball “summer vacation” program, June 15-18. There were three games against three different schools in two different towns, and their record was a respectable, 2-1. Best of all, the newlyweds, well at least one of them, was sent off with a victory.

We have had a rough week, losing our friends. I remember my Dad some years ago saying, “Son I’m losing all my friends.” When we get older this happens more and more as we all know. A passenger fell off a Carnival cruise ship last week near Tampa, but was rescued by one of the port’s pilot vessels.

I am finally starting to feel like we’re getting things under control here at The
Llano News, and even if it turns out to be very temporary, it’s a great feeling. The paper turned out pretty well last week, even though we kind of tiptoed around two
uncomfortable stories that developed as we put the paper together We had in the jail log last week an item that probably deserved more attention.

Hey folks it’s that time of year again. The 4th of July is coming fast and that means
the Annual Rock’n Riverfest and all of the whistles, bells, and fireworks that go with it! It will be held at Badu Park in Llano on Friday, July the 3rd and Saturday July 4th, with the fireworks display scheduled for 9:30 (or dark) on Saturday evening.

The Llano community is hosting a blood drive Thursday, July 2 from 2-6 PM in front of City Hall. The drive is open to the public and walk-ins are welcome. The race will get off to a shotgun start at the courthouse gazebo at 8AM on Saturday, July 4th. The race finish is at the Llano Rock’n Riverfest in Badu Park. There will be seven stops along the way. You will be given a card at the start of the race, and a stamp at each station along the way.

Russell joined local Boy Scout Troop 301 of Llano, Texas on May 21, 2002. During his seven years with troop 301, he attended summer camps in Camp Wehinapay, New Mexico; Lake Vallecito, Colorado; Lost Pines, located in Bastrop, Texas twice; Bear Creek, in Hunt, Texas; and a high adventure trip in Maine.

While the Llano Library is just finishing up this week on Thursday, June 25, the Kingsland Library program is in full swing until July 22. Join the fun at the Kingsland Library on Wednesdays at 2:00 p.m.

The Friends of the Red Top Jail will be holding an art contest to benefit the jail
restoration project. All art mediums will be accepted, including photography. The
jail will be available to artists through September, 2009. Judging will be done during
the Heritage Festival, October 17. We would like to auction some of the artwork during
the show, and there will be prizes awarded to the winning artists; there is a $10
fee to enter the contest.

Funeral services for Bill Miller, 67, of Llano were held on Thursday, June 18, in Llano at Lutie Watkins Memorial United Methodist Church, with David Murdoch officiating. He was buried at the Trinidad Cemetery in Trinidad, Texas, on Friday, June 19. Visitation with the family was held at Waldrope Hatfield Hawthorne Funeral Home on Wednesday, June 17.

Camille Kuykendall Scott, age 90 of Llano, passed away June 20, 2009. She was born on February 17, 1919 in Llano to Warren Kuykendall and Eula (Gray) Kuykendall. She was a life time resident of Llano. She married A.K. Scott on July 22, 1950 in Llano, was a rancher and a member of the Church of Christ.

Kurt Michael Kullak, age 70 of Llano and formerly of Gun Barrel City, Texas, passed away June 20, 2009 in Austin, Texas. He was born August 17, 1938 in Ascuncion, Paraguay to Kurt Polkowski Felden and Delia Kullak. Kurt was a Custom Home Builder and served in the United States Army.

Marjorie Walker Butz, age 100, died June 16, 2009 at Parks Methodist Retirement Village in Odessa, Texas. Marjorie Walker was born June 16, 1909 in Pearsall, Texas to parents Homer E. Walker and Elizabeth Small Walker. The family soon moved
to San Antonio, Texas where Marjorie attended public school, graduating from Main Avenue High School in 1926.

Mary Gail Kingery, 71, passed away Saturday, June 20, 2009 in Kingsland, Texas. She was born in Council Bluffs, Iowa to Vera Ruth (Frohman) and Alfred James Coleman September 7, 1937. She has lived in Kingsland for two years moving from Victoria. She
was a member of Friendship Bible Church in Victoria.

Minnie Mozelle “Jackie” Wimberley of Llano, passed away on her 85th Birthday. Jackie was born June 20, 1924 in Llano to William Bady Putman and Mary Jane (Raines) Putman. She had been a resident of Llano most of her life. She married Lee Wimberley, Sr. on August 1, 1946 in Llano.

Dear Editor I have recently returned home from my second hospital stay this year at Llano Memorial Hospital and my third time over the last 3 years. I just wanted to tell the folks of Llano that the quality of care that I received each time was absolutely impeccable. The nursing staff, techs, aides, housekeeping and kitchen went far above and beyond customary care.
