Volunteers for the Llano County Retired and Senior Volunteer Program put in an astounding 19,720 hours of community service – in only three months! From January 1 to March 31 of this year, the group has performed just shy of 20,000 hours of service at eleven stations and twenty-three jobs.

“I’ve coached all styles of play,” Callahan told me by phone, “and I want to know which is best for the kids.”

During public comments, John Ferguson addressed the City Council regarding the donation of labor and materials to the new Llano Events Center, stating that after obtaining work logs of city employees, that he had calculated that approximately 407 full days of work and 168 partial days of work had been done.

Only three votes separated Clayton Leverett and Tom Engler for second place in last week’s election for Llano Commisioner Precinct 1. Peter Jones, who garnered the most votes, 584, had been waiting all week to see who he would face; that wait is over.
After a five-hour manual recount Wednesday, June 6, three votes still separated Leverett and Engler leaving Engler to face Jones in the runoff on July 31.

Promote Llano’s 2nd Annual Blue Bell/Bluegrass Classic Car Show and Festival kicked off on Friday evening at the American Legion Hall with A “Taste of Llano”. The Christmas Lighting Committee will host the new hit movie, “The Avengers”, this week-end. The Avengers is rated PG-13 and will show on Friday, June 8, at 7:30 p.m. and again on Saturday, June 9, at 4:00 and 7:30 p.m. It will be a great show, and the Christmas Lighting Committee is raising money through concession sales, to help fund the upcoming Rock ‘n Riverfest on June 30!

Members of the Kingsland/Highland Lakes Genealogical Society (KGS) will gather for their annual pot luck/indoor picnic Tuesday, June 12, from 4-6 p.m. at the Kingsland American Legion Hall, located just off Rt. 2545 north of RR 1431 in Kingsland. Visitors and guests are welcome.

The Llano Pioneers Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas received the honor of “Six Star Chapter” at the 121st Annual Convention held May 17-19, 2012 at the Doubletree Hotel in Austin . To receive the award criteria must be met with projects, volunteer hours, programs, observance of Texas Honor Days and distribution of material on the history of Texas prior to 1900 to schools and organizations.

The 77th Annual Llano County Rodeo Parade celebrated a western tradition by successfully making its way through the streets of Llano, around the courthouse square, and into the history books. While in my mid-twenties (longer ago than I like to acknowledge), I received a call from my father-in-law, a pastor, asking if I would be willing to head the summer daily vacation Bible school at his church. How could I refuse? After all, this good man had given his beautiful daughter to me in marriage, mentored me in my early ministry and had provided me with my first opportunity to preach.
“We’ll have a special speaker next week,” he had announced to his congregation.

Hazel Fayrene Woodley, 87, of Buchanan Dam, passed away, June 3, 2012. She was born to John Hugo and Rilla (Gasaway) Woodley on February 15, 1925 in Byars, Oklahoma.
Mrs. Woodley was a bookkeeper for the family business for many years as well as being a homemaker. In her spare time she enjoyed dancing, sewing, baking and gardening.

Donald Ray Branham, 50, of Llano, Texas passed away Wednesday, May 30, 2012. He was born April 2, 1962 to Roy Branham and Marybelle (Collingsworth) Branham in Indianapolis, Indiana. Donald was a member of the First Assembly of God Church and was a huge Nascar fan and he loved church and his extended family.

Mr. Dillon Ray Wooten, Sr. passed from this life Thursday morning, May 17, 2012, in Houston, Texas
Born May 27, 1948 in Llano, Texas, Mr. Wooten had been a resident of Santa Fe for 10 years, previously of Liverpool. He proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War, spending the rest of his career planning and scheduling for the refineries.

Jose Rosalez Salazar, 70, passed away June 3, 2012. He was born to Jose and Fidelia Rosalez Salazar on April 4, 1942 in Torreon, Coahuila, Mexico.
Mr. Salazar immigrated to the United States in 1968. He had been a good provider for his family. At one time in his life he worked in a funeral home.

Pauline (Polly) Warton, 91, of Austin, Texas formerly of Sweetwater, Texas passed away Tuesday, May 29, 2012. She was born February 2, 1921 to Presley Paul Cooper and Virginia (Simmons) Cooper in Roby, Texas. Polly had been a resident of Austin, Texas since 2004. Lavon L. Von Krosigk-Haun, currently of Llano, Texas died June 1, 2012 at Walden Court Assisted Living Center after a short battle with heart disease. Lavon was 93 at the time of passing. She was born in Lewistown, Illinois, January 24, 1919, to Earl and Bertha Smith.
In the 1970’s Lavon obtained a Bachelors Degree in Education and Library Science from Southwest Texas State University.

The Llano Events Center hosted the 77th Annual Llano Open Pro Rodeo this past weekend in the new covered arena. Ticket sales totaled 725 for attendance Friday night and 1200 on Saturday. The stands were full and fans cheered as the 258 contestants competed in Bareback Riding, Steer Wrestling, Breakaway Roping, Tie Down Roping, Saddle Bronc, Team Roping, Barrel Racing and Bull Riding.

The Llano County Historical Society recently held their annual membership meeting at the Raesener Ranch with Dennis and Toni Raesener as hosts for nearly 80 people. Author/Singer/Songwriter W.C. Jameson was the guest speaker for the evening and shared tales of Billy the Kid and mixed in a few songs for good measure – even one about Billy the Kid.
