Llano County Animal Control is urging pet owners to make sure pets are up to date on all vaccines, but especially rabies. There have been ten cases of rabies confirmed this year; five of them in Kingsland. So far, no domesticated animals have been reported with the disease; there have been six skunks, two raccoons, and one bat and one fox.

The Llano News has learned that Mike Ridings will be the new head baseball coach of the Llano High Jackets. Ridings, with more than 400 career wins, is now at San Antonio East Central. He won two state championships while coaching in New Mexico. The selection committee chose Ridings, but the Llano ISD Board of Trustees must approve the hiring.

A fourth grade teacher at Packsaddle Elementary has filed a complaint against administrators with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, alleging discrimination due to a medical disability that she has. Karena Prew stated that Llano ISD Superintendent Dennis Hill and former Packsaddle Principal Dale Mason discriminated against her because of a medical condition, which caused her undue stress and said that she has been on a leave of absence from her position since February of this year.

Dark Shadows is coming to Llano this weekend! City volunteers will run the concessions, and proceeds will benefit the Llano Food Pantry and New Horizons. AUSTIN, Texas—The Texas Historical Foundation, a 58-year old preservation organization, has announced preservation grants to Llano and Valley Springs for restoration and renovation of historic structures. First, the Friends of Llano Red Top Jail received funds to help stabilize the foundation of the city’s 1895 jail structure, which was used until 1982.

The first official meeting of Texas Hill Quilters was a great success.  Over thirty quilters (men and women) were present.  These quilters came from Burnet, Marble Falls, Cherokee, Tow and Llano.  Members brought either a completed project or one that is in process.  The quality of work exemplifies the talent that lies in the minds, hands and hearts of these crafts-folks!

Don Bruhl Jr. of Marble Falls was born on January 15, 1937 in Fredericksburg. He died peacefully at Seton Hospital, in Austin on Monday, June 4, 2012. Don spent his youth in Llano where his dad Don, Sr. ran the local drug store. He was a member of the basketball team and his 1955 team is in the Llano Athletics Hall of Fame.

Earl Von Edmondson III, 54 of Llano, Texas was born September 28, 1957 to Earl Von Edmondson, Jr. and Juanda Kay Edmondson in Roswell, New Mexico. He passed away June 7, 2012 in Llano, Texas. Survivors are his sons, Earl Von Edmondson, IV, stationed overseas, Nicholas Adam McGriff, Phoenix, Arizona and Sean Kerri Drolshagen, Llano, Texas. In 1976 he married Jackie Lynn Gregg and in 1998 he married Janine Marie Caress. His father, Earl Von Edmondson, Jr.

Leroy Rode passed away Friday June 8, 2012 at the age of 84 years in Fredericksburg, Texas. He was born October 14, 1927 to Ida (Dittmar) and Regu Rode in Fredericksburg, Texas. He married Margaret (Tatsch) Rode August 3, 1949 in Harper, Texas. Leroy was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Castell, Texas.

David Lawrence Evans, 69, of Bluffton, passed away June 10, 2012. He was born to David Lawrence and Louise (Barnett) Evans on March 1, 1943 in Texas City, Texas. Mr. Evans proudly served for four years as a military policeman with the Texas National Guard. He was married to his high school sweetheart, Lynda Fitch on August 15, 1964.

Eugene Russell, 92, of Llano, Texas, joined his Lord and Savior on June 7, 2012. He was born March 10, 1920 in Del Rio, Texas to Rex and Myrtle Slaughter Russell. He died in his home in Llano that he and his wife lived for the past 56 years. Eugene graduated from Del Rio High School in 1939.

Dear Editor, I would like to express my appreciation to the dozen people who showed up to tear up the floors at the Red Top Jail last Wednesday. In five hours we were able to remove all of the tongue and groove flooring in two of the jailor’s bedrooms. It was hot and the work was hard, but we got all of the flooring removed that we could.

In November 1936 voters approved an amendment to the Texas Constitution establishing the Teacher Retirement System of Texas, and in 1937 TRS was officially formed. Originally it was formed to provide service and disability retirement benefits to teachers and administrators of the public school systems of Texas, but in 1949 the legislator expanded membership eligibility to all employees of public education institutions.

MARBLE FALLS—Llano High’s 7-on-7 team is going to know as much about the Mustangs as Todd Dodge does once this summer league is over. Some might wish it to be 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. The teams got together in Marble Falls once again, June 5, and the hosts won all three games.

Llano High has become either the graveyard of coaches or cradle of coaches. The incoming leaders hope it’s the beginning of, or continuation of, success. Those departing will try to turn their new schools into a cradle of golden memories. The latest to receive attention for his exit is Brad Harman, the Jackets’ head baseball coach for four years; his football duties have included the role of defensive coordinator the past two seasons.

It is June and the Llano All-Star teams have started with their tournament seasons. The Llano Machine Pitch All-Star teams recently had their first tournament in the Pride of the Hill Country Classic in Mason, Texas. Llano was represented by two teams from its machine pitch league, as the Llano Orange team consists of the 8 year old boys and Llano Black is made up of the 7 year old boys.

Sunday, June 17, has been designated as Father’s Day. In choosing someone who historically represents what we perceive as admirable fatherhood, a man was chosen who was living in Llano County when it was created, who was a permanent citizen and died in Llano County after a lengthy life, who contributed greatly to the county as it developed, and who, of course, was the father of a large number of children, grandchildren, etc.
