Commissioners reinstated the county wide Burn Ban at their June 25 meeting, effective that same day. The Burn Ban will not prevent fireworks displays put on by Kingsland’s Aqua Boom, the City of Llano or Escondido in Horseshoe Bay. Replatting of the Catharine Cove Subdivision was approved, including a name change to Hill Country Cove, and the final reading of the Schuchardt Tract was also approved. This year marks the 10th Annual Rock’n Riverfest, held at Badu Park along the banks of the Llano River. Starting on June 29, Badu Park will come alive with ‘more fun than is imaginable’ as the event kicks off on Friday with the 4Wheelin’ – King of the Hill event at Toyland.

Geoffrey Sanders graduated May 11th from Texas A&M University, Class of 2012, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Agricultural and Biological Engineering, completing his undergraduate career with a 4.0 grade point average, graduating Summa Cum Laude. He also was very active in Bible studies and University- sponsored community aid projects while at A&M., and led several intra-dorm Bible studies in Walton Hall.

Lone Star Capital Bank and Cattleman’s National Bank announced jointly on June 20 that they have entered into an Agreement and Plan of Merger under which the two banks will merge. The merger is expected to be complete by October 1 of this year. The merger will result in Lone Star Capital Bank holding approximately $210 million in total assets.

Roberta C. Renfro, 81 of Kingsland, Texas passed away Sunday, June 24, 2012. She was born January 31, 1931 to Arthur Behrens and Hattie (Kattner) Behrens in Killeen, Texas. Roberta married John Renfro on December 3, 1949 in Copperas Cove, Texas. In her younger years she enjoyed painting, knitting, embroidering and bowling and was always willing to help other people.

Fifteen Llano County 4-H members participated in Texas 4-H Roundup in Lubbock, June 11-14, 2012. Roundup was held on the campus of Texas Tech University. Vance Bauer received a Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Scholarship in the amount of $16,000, and Clay Tarter received a Richard Wallrath Educational Foundation in the amount of $10,000. The Nutrition Quiz Bowl team, consisting of James Smarr, Cole Perkins, and Kathryn Price placed seventh.

I haven’t read everything written about the recent Roger Clemens verdict—that he was not guilty of perjury of telling Congress he did not take performance-enhancing drugs—but I’ve read enough to form an opinion opposing some of what I’ve seen. Goose Gossage, the great relief pitcher we all knew really belonged teaching law at Harvard, charged, “He lied!.” The first big column I saw was in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Some of the most rewarding summer activities available to residents and tourists alike in the Llano Uplift Region of Central Texas depend heavily on the recreational outlets made available through the Highland Lakes formed from the Colorado River. The first and largest lake in this chain is Lake Buchanan, which begins in the upper northeastern corner of Llano County and the northwestern corner of Burnet County, and today serves as a large portion of the boundary for both counties.
