While researching and writing a book on crime and justice, I was surprised to learn that two-thirds of those in prison had full time jobs at the time of their arrests.
These people, now barred from the simple pleasure of walking down the street, had not been the victims of unemployment or bad economic conditions; they had lost their freedom because they had not been content with what they had and were willing to break the law to get more.

Commissioners voted 5-0 to approve the proposed tax rate for the coming year on Monday.
Currently, the tax rate is $ .299800 per $100 of taxable value. The effective rate is $ .298586.
The proposed rate is $ .308000, which will raise taxes essentially by a penny.
The increase will mean that on average, homeowners will see around a $15 hike in their tax bill for the year.

The most reliable sources are the United States Census records, which began in 1860 for Llano County since the county itself was not created until 1856.

It’s hard to believe that summer is coming to an end and school is about to start again. That also means that at the libraries we shift gears a little too. Summer Reading Program is finished for another year, but regular youth programs fill the void – just perhaps not with as much of the “controlled chaos” as is generated by the larger number of children in the summer program.
The Kingsland Library will continue with the Storytime Connection programs on Wednesdays.
