This weekend there will be no rest for the weary in Llano! Planes and boats will keep locals and visitors alike entertained throughout the Labor Day Weekend. The Llano Municipal Airport will be hosting its 11th Annual Hammerfest aerobatic contest this weekend, September 1-2, hosted by the City of Llano.

World Heritage Student Exchange Programs has qualified Nina Willis of Valley Spring as a host family for Till Oliver, a student from Germany. Oliver will be attending Llano High School for the upcoming semester. Till Oliver has met all of the academic and character qualifications necessary to be accepted as an exchange student by World Heritage and the Willis Family welcomed him upon his arrival in August. He is a 16 year old 10th grader from Neustadt, Germany (near Berlin).

As you hear Ricky Van Shelton tell of “Living Proof” it becomes really clear, true love never dies, it just continues to grow. On August 31, 2009, Jerrell Sagebiel and Dell Becker were married in a private ceremony with Mr. Michael Suber officiating. For the past three years, this couple has faced and been dealt some horrific blows.

The Llano Country Opry will be staged on Saturday, September 8, at the Lantex Theater in downtown Llano, Texas. There will be two shows with the matinee to begin at 2:30 PM and the evening show to start at 7:30 PM. Fuel Coffeehouse will no longer be open after this Saturday, unless someone steps up to assume the business. What began several years ago as a way to reach out to the community, Fuel has been bringing music and coffee to Llano ever since. According to Lynda Gammage, it has become the gathering place in Llano, a place that has become an integral part of Llano.

The time has arrived to come together for another exciting year of Women’s Bible Study! This fall we will explore Nehemiah, one of the history books in the Old Testament. Our twelve week study begins September 12 and ends December 5. We will meet each Wednesday from 9:15 am to 11:15 am at the Lutie Watkins Memorial United Methodist Church which is located at 800 Wright Street in Llano.

Some memories are soon lost and some linger. One of my favorite lingering ones is listening to a father-son guitar and vocal duet titled, “The Land of Beginning Again”. Poor decisions had divided these two singers but they had decided to let their past be past and start over again.

Hours prior to an injunction hearing on August 27 in Travis County, LCRA attorneys notified Central Texas Electric Cooperative (CTEC) personnel that LCRA was dropping its pursuit of a temporary injunction. CTEC, along with six other utilities, made a bold move on behalf of its members by notifying LCRA on August 13 that it was terminating an exclusive wholesale power agreement that prevented CTEC from purchasing power on the open market.

Frank Griggs Post 370 of Llano is one of thousands of Legion Posts throughout the United States that serve veterans’ needs. In keeping with this mission, they’ve come up with a unique program for Llano County active duty service men and women and their families: Free first year membership in the Legion Post and Auxiliary Unit. Some time back, the Llano Military News Group was organized by Llano County families having sons or daughters actively serving in the Armed Forces.

Two were pronounced dead at the scene of a plane crash on Sautrday, about 5 miles from the Llano Municipal Airport. Bobby Luker, Jr, 51 of Bertram and Scott Belt, 60 of Kerrville were identified as victims of the crash, according to officials. John Earl McPherson, Jr. passed away on August 25, 2012 in Richland Springs, Texas. He was born in Llano, Texas on April 20, 1951 to John Earl, Sr. and Rosemary Treadwell McPherson. Vernon Martin Suggs passed away Thursday, August 23, 2012 at 7 P.M. at the age of 92 years and 11 months old. He was born in Wagoner, Oklahoma to Novvie Mable (Potts) Suggs and Jim Criss Suggs. He was married to Thelma (Hunt) Suggs in Dewey, Oklahoma on December 31, 1940. He is survived by his wife, Thelma of 71 and a half years of marriage and two sons, Vernon Suggs, Jr.

Patricia Lavelle Smith, 82, of Tow, died August 28, 2012. She was born to John R. and Annie Beulah (Templeton) Moss on July 10, 1930 in San Saba, Texas. She and her husband owned and operated All Appliances in San Antonio, Texas. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Tow.

Robert Eugene Powell “Bob” 64, passed away peacefully August 25, 2012 at his home in Bryan Texas, surrounded by family. Bob was born December 20, 1947 to Mike Eugene Powell and Mavis Louise Powell in Ft. Worth, Texas. He attended Peacock Military Academy in San Antonio Texas, there he was Head of the Drum and Bugle Corp, drum major, and he played all sports and received a football scholarship to Southwest Texas State University.

Bernice Lucas of Austin passed away August 24, 2012 at the age of 98. She was born on March 13, 1914, to the parents of Rina and Euel Moore on a ranch at Click, Texas in Llano County, Texas. At the age of 16 she left for Austin to pursue her career as a beautician.

The Llano Tea Party will meet September 6 to elect new officers and steering committee members. The meeting will be held at Inman’s Kitchen in Llano beginning at 6:00 pm for social time, followed at 6:30 pm by dinner, elections and guest speaker. Anyone interested running for one of the officer or five at-large steering committee positions should be prepared to enter his/her name for nomination.

The USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), Llano County Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) and the Local Working Group invite the public to their annual Conservation Stakeholder’s Meeting at 9:00 a.m. September 5 at the Texas Agrilife meeting room located at 1447 state Hwy 71 East Unit E. Each year, the Local Working Group hosts a public meeting to determine the resource concerns and needs of the area and how to best address those needs.

Hill Country Memorial Hospital, orthopedic surgeons and rehab professionals are teaming up to offer orthopedic and physical therapy evaluations to high school athletes on Saturdays this fall beginning September 1. Students across the nation will see a change in what is being served in their local school cafeterias this year due to new mandates by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Recently with all the renovations, restorations, and improvements going on around our downtown square, attention has been drawn to portions of those original buildings that have not been publically accessible for many years—the upper stories. It’s nice to see a rekindling of interest in restoring the architectural features of our older buildings because so many of the upper levels were in use from the time the buildings were first built in the 1880’s and 1890’s.

It’s hard to believe that summer has ended and school has started again! The Llano and Kingsland Libraries are ready to meet all of the needs of our students with the books they will need. Not only do we have great youth collections filled with the books your children want to read, we also have the books from the special reading lists.
