City Council, short two aldermen, met in regular session on Monday, October 15. Alderwoman Sherry Simpson was absent due to a month long trip to Africa to see her daughter, and former Alderman JR Decker’s seat is still vacant, pending appointment by the Council. Council has received letters from three candidates, Dustin McLeod, Gail Lang, and Richard Staley, all seeking to fill the vacant seat.

On Sunday, October 14, Llano County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested four juveniles, ranging in age from 14 to 16 after officers witnessed suspicious activity in the area of Dan Street and RR 1431 in Kingsland. Officers approached the juveniles and during the course of questioning, officers found in their possession burglary tools and property that had been reported stolen in a recent burglary. There is absolutely going to be a good time for all in Llano this weekend!!! The Chuck Wagon Cook-Off starts Friday evening at Badu Park along with Heritage Days Festival that begins Saturday morning around the Courthouse Square. The Grass Strip Field Fly-In & Camp out at the Llano Airport begins Saturday morning and, to top the weekend off, the Ranch Rodeo begins Saturday evening at 6:00pm at the Events Center.

Llano Main Street will once again be sponsoring the annual Fall/Scarecrow Contest.  Heritage Days Festival and the Llano River Chuck Wagon Cook-off are coming up this weekend, and we encourage Llano businesses to look colorful and seasonal.

There is increasing interest in antique roses because they are hardier and easier to grow than modern hybrid roses. Greetings to one and all in Llano and surrounding areas! Keeping my Breviary or Clergymen’s Liturgy of the Hours close at hand, I pray we are in God’s daily care so that He is always near in our needs of the time. We do not see ourselves as predictors of the future, but in the short term perhaps we can forecast with some accuracy our plans in the family.

October is named annually “Pastor Appreciation Month,” but some may wonder why pastors deserve an official time to be appreciated. What’s so special about the ministry? Frequently, I look back to my youth and give thanks for pastors who made positive changes in my life. Perhaps the primary reason for appreciating pastors is because of their important role of being life changers.

Gary Neil Meguire, Sr., 78, of Llano, Texas passed away Tuesday, October 9, 2012 in Houston, Texas. He was born August 7, 1934 to Elsie Lavada (Herridge) Meguire and William B. Meguire. Gary was born and raised in Llano, Texas and was a veteran of the United States Navy. His parents and two brothers, Lee and Tootie Meguire, preceded him in death. Jacob Cole was born on June 2, 2009 and joined the angels in Heaven on October 13, 2012. His Mema Sheri Eggers; Papa Lynn Eggers; sisters Miley and Alivia; and mother Brittany Anderson survive him. Robyn Berenice Greer (1960-2012), passed away on September 27, 2012. She graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a B. A. and obtained her Bachelors of Science in Nursing from U.T.M.B. in Galveston. Her husband Joe Greer and their son Alexander Greer, her father Alton Curry and his wife Annie, and her brothers Mark Curry and John Curry survive her. A memorial service will be held on Friday October 19, 2012 at 2:00 P.M.

Commissioner John Kight, Chairman of Hill Country MHDD Centers (Hill Country) recently swore in Hill Country board members to their new terms of office. Hill Country provides mental health, developmental disability, early childhood intervention, and substance abuse services to a nineteen county area of the greater Texas Hill Country. Llano High School CX debaters placed first at Cameron Yoe High School on Saturday, October 13. Sophomore Kasey Hairston and freshman Matt Cohen paired to win gold medals in their first CX Tournament of the 2012-13 UIL Academic season. Kasey also won the Golden Gavel for having the highest speaker points. These honors indicate a great future for this new CX team.

Time is flying by at Llano ISD and it seems like yesterday that we were welcoming students and staff for the first day of school. The end of the first grading period is near and we have already seen great things happening at every level. As I walk down the halls of each campus, I am amazed each and every day of just how gifted our students and staff really are at Llano Independent School District.

Don’t get too upset by the score. Liberty Hill, one of the top teams in the state—which is like saying Joe Biden has a sharp tongue—ran its Slot-T like a slot machine and cashed in for a 55-28 win, October 12. Llano’s offense, led by the Two Rs, countered the multi-back, multi-fake running game with one of the biggest passing nights in school history and outgained the Panthers.

Soccer, Soccer, Soccer. This weekend was full of fun playing soccer games. Our U6 division does not keep score. The Spotlight team of this week is Hill Country Plumbing coached by Jason Strain. Our U8 divison has four teams. First game of the day was Chicken Express coached by Tim Woerdnell playing JM Huber coached by Chris Wolford.

The 7th grade Daubers split with Liberty Hill last week. The Black team won 22 - 8, while the White team lost to the Panthers 12 - 29. The Black team was led by running back, Shawn Kizer, who accounted for all of the Dauber’s points. Clinton Wright also contributed to the strong running game.

The Llano 8th Grade football team lost their one game match-up against Liberty Hill last week. The Daubers got off to a slow start in this one allowing 16 early points and never really recovered. Liberty Hill returned the opening kick-off for a touchdown and scored on their initial drive of the game putting Llano in a hole early.

Benjamin F. Beeson was elected sheriff of Llano County in 1884, following the tenure of George W. Shaw. He served two years and was re-elected in 1886.
