Against their biggest rival, a formidable foe seemingly forever, the Llano volleyball Jackets registered a knockout in three rounds, October 23, and earned their first playoff berth since 2009. No Jacket athletic team reached postseason all of 2011-12. Llano blasted Burnet, 25-19, 25-19, and 25-23 to secure third place with a 6-4 record in 8-AAA.

After bringing Christmas to over 100 kids last year, the Llano County Sheriff’s Office is gearing up for it’s second year of the Brown Santa Program. Llano County officials have joined forces to help bring a little Christmas joy to children, ages 0-18, which live in Llano County. The program collects funds to purchase gifts, as well as donations of gifts, and gives them to children and families who meet criteria of need. Commissioners and Judge Wayne Brascom considered an appeal brought forth by CNX Corporation, represented by attorney Randall Robinson. Robinson told the Court that the trouble started when a tree branch fell on a home that CNX had recently purchased, and caused damage to the roof, siding and HVAC unit. Repairs were done, and cost approximately $12,000.

Just a day and half into early voting, and by noon on Tuesday, there had been 1,241 votes cast in the 2012 election. Monday saw 830 voters at the poll, with Kingsland Library having the most at 323 voters, Llano Library saw 307, and the Horseshoe Bay POA had 200. Danni Elizabeth Watkins was born September 11, 2012 in Corsicana, Texas to Felisha Bethke and Darrin Watkins. Danni weighed 7 pounds and measured 20 ¼ inches long at birth. Welcoming Danni are her brother Billy and sisters Rebecca, Shyanne and Savanna. Grandparents are Sandy Williamson of Llano, Texas and Michael and Becky Watkins of Sanger, Texas.

The Ladies Auxiliary of the Llano Fire Department will have their annual Haunted House at the Llano Community Center on Saturday, October 27 and Wednesday October 31. The hours will run from 7:00 pm to 10:30 pm. New ideas and volunteers are welcome. Llano Main Street is grateful to all who came out to volunteer and to participate in the Heritage Day Festival fun last week-end. Many businesses got their fall window dressing on for the visitors coming through town. The Llano Pioneer Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas traveled to Kerrville October 13-14 to attend a District VIII workshop sponsored by Joshua D Brown Chapter. Attending were President Arlene Garey, HSB, Registrar, Mitzie Powell, Prairie Mountain Community, and guest, Gayle Green of San Antonio. Friday evening they enjoyed an art show, Schreiner Mansion Tour, and refreshments.

Has Christian camping outlived its usefulness?  Have we passed into another era in which Christian camping is no longer worth the effort?  Have new technologies enabled Christians to get what they need in their spiritual lives from other sources with much less cost and hassle? I think the exact opposite is true.

1942-2012 Wiley Joseph Leavitt Jr., 70, of Kingsland, passed away on October 17, 2012. He was born to Wiley Joseph Leavitt, Sr. and Vida Simpson Leavitt on September 28, 1942 in Round Rock, Texas. Mr. Leavitt was raised and lived in Leander, Texas. He was a carpenter and building contractor by trade, until he retired to Lake LBJ, Kingsland, Texas in 2002, where he enjoyed swimming and playing in the lake with his grandkids.

Guadalupe Stinespring, 71, of Llano, Texas formerly of Austin, Texas passed away Friday, October 19, 2012. She was born December 11, 1940 to Rosa (Gonzales) Lopez and Cornelio Lopez in Llano, Texas. The Llano and Brownwood schools are holding a light hearted competition to raise food items, specifically Rice & Beans for their local food banks. Llano will be collecting rice and Brownwood will be collecting beans. The winner will be the school that collects the most food measured in total pounds as noted on the front of products packaging.

The Llano High School cheerleaders would like to host a cheerleader clinic for all interested elementary students on Saturday, October 27, from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. at the LHS gym. Participants will learn a cheer, chant and a cadence dance to perform during the first quarter of the Burnet football game. The Llano Youth Soccer Association had a full slate of action over the week at the new Llano Soccer Complex. In U16 Division, Llano Police Department defeated Moursand Ins, 5-2, MVP was Dieago and Sportsman Skylar Sanderson. MVP for Moursand Insurance was Nate Woolson and Sportsman was Kathryn. Coaches are Arron Hogan and Allyn Rub. In U12 Division, The Llano Volunteer Fire Department tied with Llano National Bank.

Black team lost 6 – 36 White team won 22 - 0 The seventh grade Daubers travelled to Lampasas Thursday and came home with a split. The first game of the evening was not the best for Llano, as the Black team suffered its first loss of the season to the Badgers 6–36.

LAMPASAS—The offense has received most of the credit for Llano’s excellent year of rebounding from a 1-9 campaign in 2011, but October 19, the defense never rested in the closing seconds, authored the goal-line stand of the year, and held off the Badgers, 20-13. It was the Jackets’ first district victory since 2010. “It was an epic win,” said head coach Craig Slaughter.

It was great to see so many Llano folks enjoying this past weekend’s events! The Llano River Chuck Wagon Cook-Off was quite the scene with all the wagons and wagon cooks. The chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes, beans, bread & cobbler were delicious! In fact, I was lucky enough to eat the 2nd place chicken fried steak!

A recent article discussed the role blacksmiths played in early Llano County and identified the locations of the first blacksmith shops in the town of Llano. Two other vocations were also vital to the transportation needs of the community—livery stables and wagon yards. These businesses were usually set up on the edge of town where the main roads came into town.
