Last weekend the Christmas holiday season kicked off with the first night of Starry, Starry Nights, Black Friday shopping and Small Business Saturday. Llano will continue the holiday celebration with the Llano High School Theatre Department presenting, an adaptation of Charles Dickens, “A Christmas Carol”. Friday, November 30 at 7:30pm, and Sunday, December 1 at 2:00PM, admission is free, but donations will be accepted.

With no chance of rain in the immediate future, Commissioners voted unanimously to reinstate the County Wide Burn Ban. The ban became effective at the November 26 meeting, and prohibits all open fires. A Burn Ban Violation is Class “C” Misdemeanor and is punishable up a maximum of $500. In other fire-related news, Commissioners approved an order formally creating Llano County Emergency District #4.

The holidays are fast approaching, which means parties, shopping, hosting, visiting family and friends and, most likely, busy schedules and stress. It’s also the time of year when people tend to gain weight. Starting an exercise routine and healthy eating habits now, rather than after the holidays, can make sticking to a diet and exercise regimen a habit by the time the Thanksgiving turkey is carved.

Ahhh, the week after Thanksgiving! All of the turkey is gone (hopefully) and you’re getting caught up in the Christmas spirit. Decorations are going up, gift lists are getting filled, and holiday plans with family and friends are filling your calendars. There are also many events around the area. In Llano Starry, Starry Nights on the Llano River has opened, the Lighted Christmas Parade is coming up this Saturday, and the next week is a dinner theater “A Dickens of a Christmas”.

Three young ladies represented Llano as All-American Cheerleaders in the 63rd Annual HEB Holiday Parade on Thanksgiving Day in Houston, Texas. Meredith Moore and Kacy Rowley from the LHS Junior Varsity squad and Lexi Lucas from the LJH 8th Grade squad, along with more than 330 cheerleaders and dancers from across the nation, all took part in the holiday festivities. The Llano Tea Party will hold its monthly meeting on Thursday, December 6th, at Inman’s Kitchen located on Hwy 29W in Llano. The social hour begins at 6:00 p.m., and dinner is served at 6:30 p.m. Peggy Venable, Texas Director for Americans for Prosperity, will be this month’s guest speaker. Council voted unanimously, with one member abstaining, to approve the Specific Use Permit to allow a dentist office in the newly approved SF-1 (single family) Overlay District on Ford Street. The office, which will be located at 1807 Ford, was approved on Monday, November 19, after much discussion, including disapproval from nearby residents.

Since my daily radio broadcast, books and weekly newspaper column penetrate prison walls, I frequently receive letters from prisoners. One was so moving it will remain unforgettable. This young convict had spent many years behind bars for a variety of offenses. He was writing from solitary confinement because of trouble he had caused in the prison and admitted he had read one of my books only because there was nothing else available.

Shirley Sutherland Morgan, 70, of Kingsland passed away on November 25, 2012. She was born to A.R. and Ivelt (Morck) Sutherland on May 7, 1942 in Greenriver, Wyoming. Mrs. Morgan worked in Marketing and as a Certified Nurses Assistant for many years. She was married to James Morgan. Recently an Austin news channel held an interview with a top state elected official who was promoting the need to approve school vouchers in Texas. He stated the need for vouchers was driven by the need to allow for school choice. The elected official stated that approximately 500 campuses across the state of Texas were rated "Unacceptable."

The Llano I.S.D. Board of Trustees adopted an updated financial plan for the district at its November meeting. The plan was unanimously recommended by the administrative team.
