In a special meeting held Tuesday, January 8 in Austin, the LCRA Board of Directors heeded the recommendation of LCRA staff to amend the emergency drought relief request that the board submitted to TCEQ in November. The amended request comes after Senators Troy Fraser and Kirk Watson blasted LCRA for their original petition for relief to TCEQ which called for the release of water downstream to first in time, first in right water customers, the rice farmers in South Texas.

Since 2011, the Llano Military News Group has been a program of Frank Griggs Post 370, The American Legion, Department of Texas, and operated as an adjunct committee of the Post. Up until recently the committee was chaired by Roy Butnyn, Vice Commander of Post 370. This past year, the Llano Military News Group was incorporated in the State of Texas as a non-profit corporation with Lance Idol serving as their newly elected President.

Texas A&M University has named its honor students for the fall semester, recognizing them for outstanding academic performance. The Dean’s Honor Roll recognizes students taking at least 15 semester hours during the fall semester who have maintained a 3.75 or higher grade point (GPR) out of a possible 4.0. On Monday, January 7, at approximately 6:30pm, a driver accidently hit the accelerator instead of the brake, causing his 2005 Toyota Pre-Runner to crash into the front of the Sonic Drive-In in Llano. According to Llano Police Department Lieutenant Kevin Ratliff, a 69-year-old male was driving when he failed to stop before striking the building. The driver and a passenger were unharmed.

After six years of thinking about it, Rhonda Herridge has decided to act on a longtime wish - to open a home that would help women who need it learn life skills and move forward in their lives. Herridge has seen the need first hand; she took in her grandchildren when their parents were unable to care for themselves.

Museum Jail Plan. The Toxey/McMillan group presented their interpretive plan of the future museum for the jail at the LanTex Theater on December 20. The idea was to contrast the homey living space in the jailor’s quarters downstairs with the stark, depressing jail cells upstairs. This museum is meant to be a living history of life in the jail from the early 1900s through the mid-century. Stonemason Bids.

The Kingsland Volunteer Fire Department will be able to buy a new water rescue boat and the Kingsland Convention and Community Center will be able to buy a new heating and cooling unit with the help of two community development grants. LCRA and Central Texas Electric Cooperative provided the grants — $18,635 to the Kingsland VFD and $4,940 to the Kingsland Convention and Community Center.

It was just before New Year’s and the Gracious Mistress of the Parsonage and I were relaxing after a busy week of toil and labor. Not paying much attention to my surroundings, I had immersed myself in a favorite book. As far as I am concerned, nothing compares to a favorite book when you are trying to relax and unwind.

William C. “Bill” Haverlah was living at Walden Court Assisted Living in Llano, Texas at the time of his death on January 5, 2013.  He was born June 13, 1931 in DeWees, Wilson County, Texas to Lee Henry Haverlah and Anna Alma (Matheaus) Haverlah. He lived on the farm in DeWees with his grandparents until the age of six.

Vernell Ratliff Franklin was born on May 30, 1919 in Llano County to Jesse W. and Della Mae Ratliff. She passed away on January 4, 2013 in Cedar Park, Texas. She married Charlie Allen Franklin on September 25, 1937 in Burnet, Texas. He preceded her in death on June 10, 2012.

Bertha Nell Brooks Hutto, age 86, died early Wednesday morning, January 16, 2013 in Round Rock, Texas following a short illness. On July 8, 1926, Bertha Nell was born to L. G. & Bertha (Davis) Daniel in Bertram, Texas. She was the youngest of 5 children. Her family lived in both Central and West Texas when she was a child, and Bertha Nell graduated from Divide High School in 1943.

Dear Editor, It’s probably safe to say, that on New Year’s Day, while every detail of the political games concerning the “fiscal cliff” were being played and replayed, not many citizens were watching CSPAN to see what was going on on the floor of the U. S. House of Representatives. That’s regrettable because three Texas Representatives took the opportunity January 1st, 2013 to give one minute speeches.

Hill Country Memorial (HCM) was awarded a 2012 Five-Star Hospital/Birthing Center/ Midwife Registration award by the Texas Department of State Health Services Vital Statistics Unit for meeting state criteria registering births. Since predictions about the Mayan calendar did not materialize, the year 2013 can make its debut without the onset of gloom and doom. That doesn’t mean the knowledge behind the calendar was false, but rather our current theories on such subjects were based on assumptions that were incorrect. The Mayan calendar shows the world revolves around certain laws of the universe that are constant, even if the laws do not visibly present themselves for hundreds, even thousands of years.
