The suspect, Benton Paul Buratti was apprehended on January 18, 2013 without incident, according to a press release by the Llano County Sheriff's Office. Buratti is being held at the Tarrant County Jail until he can be transported back to Llano.

Despite the recent cold and rainy weather, it’s never too early to start planning for spring especially when it comes to your garden. The Llano County Master Gardeners invite the public to attend a program on Art in the Garden by Linda O'Nan. The meeting will be at 5:30 p.m.

Once again another year the Kingsland/Lake LBJ Chamber will be hosting the awards banquet on February 15, 2013 at the Kingsland convention/community center. Happy hour will be at 6:00 pm and dinner at 7:00 pm. Tickets will be on sale at the chamber office for $25.00 per person. The theme for this year's banquet will be "An Evening at Tara"

The Friends of the Llano County Library will be hosting The Hobbit this weekend at the LanTex Theater. This PG-13 movie will be showing on Friday, January 18th, at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, January 19th, at 4:00 and 7:30 p.m.

Liz began her art endeavor in the early 1990’s when she took Tole Painting from Shirley Gray. It sparked her interest in painting and when Ruth Lythe invited her to a demo at the Llano Fine Art Gallery she said she was hooked. She has been one of the most faithful members since 1995.

The Llano National Bank-Buchanan Dam Branch received more than 100 entries for the 2012 Christmas coloring contest. The entries for the contest, designed for children preschool through third grade, were judged by artistic volunteers from Buchanan Dam Arts and Crafts.
Preschool winners are first place, Haiden Walton and Brayden Ybarra; second place, Logan Green and Josie McDavid; third place, Christopher Barnes and Kayton Jones.

The Llano City Council voted last week to appoint three new members to the city’s Planning and Zoning Commission. Stacy Mangum and Marcy Methvin were both voted to serve two-year terms, and Sam Oatman was voted to serve a one-year term.
The vote came after Council voted to amend the ordinance that determines how candidates are appointed, after it was discovered that there was a conflict between the bylaws of the board and the original ordinances for the P&Z Committee.

I am not superstitious [knock on wood] but some things happen to me that leave me a little bit suspicious. I am not sure if there is a connection between superstitious and suspicious, but if there were, that would explain a lot in my life.

Last week, LCRA requested that TCEQ grant an emergency drought order allowing LCRA to withhold water from rice farmers, should the Highland Lakes have a combined storage of under 850,000 acre feet on March 1, 2013; the request also did not allow for a second release, should the water be below that mark.

John Ray Counts, 64, born in Galveston, Texas died in Killeen, Texas on Saturday, December 8, 2012. John served his country during the Viet Nam war and was honorably discharged to return to the Texas Hill Country. Later John moved to Minnesota where he has family and friends. John’s love of the Hill Country brought him back to settle in Kingsland, Texas, where he started a painting business.

Mrs. Debra Marie (Berger) Pilkington Arms, 52, of Cherokee passed away Thursday, January 10, 2013. Visitation will be Thursday, January 17th from 5:00 -7:00 pm at Nobles Funeral Chapel followed by a recitation of the Rosary at 7:00 pm. A funeral mass is scheduled for Friday at 10:00 am at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church with the Rev.

Eddie William Renken, 91, of Pflugerville, formerly of Tow, passed away January 7, 2013. He was born to Eddie Carl and Katherine (Spoede) Renken on September 1, 1921 in Wallis, Texas.
Mr. Renken was raised in Wallis until he joined the United States National Guard in 1940. His unit was activated later that year and he proudly served his country until 1945 during WWII.

Flora Margaret Holt, 96, of Burnet passed away on January 8, 2013. She was born to Hollis and Isabel (Rice) Beem on May 6, 1916 in Hereford, Texas.
Margaret was a member of the Fulton Community Church and a member of the Ladies League.
Daughters, LaJune Coffing and Carol Ann Beem both of Battle Creek, Michigan and a niece Malinda Galley of Lake Buchanan, Texas survive her.

Kenneth B. Smith, 72, of Cherokee passed away on Sunday, January 6, 2013, in Llano, Texas. Visitation was held on Wednesday, January 9, 2013, from 6:00 - 8:00 pm at Heritage Funeral Home San Saba. Services were held at 10:00 am on Thursday, January 10, 2013, at the Baptist Church of Cherokee in Cherokee, Texas.

Beatrice Berry, 93, passed away on Sunday, January 6, 2013. Visitation was held on Thursday, January 10, 2013, at Heritage Funeral Home San Saba from 12:00 until 1:30 pm. Her graveside service followed at 2:00 pm at Cherokee (formerly Hanna) Cemetery in Cherokee, Texas.
Beatrice Berry was born to William Dennis and Etta Roberta Spurlin on December 27, 1919, in Lampasas, Texas.

Claude William Haight, 91, of Granite Shoals, Texas passed away January 10, 2013. He was born to Claude Miller and Marian Ruth (Sweetland) Haight in Chicago, Illinois on December 25, 1921.
Claude was a 28 year resident of Burnet County residing in Marble Falls prior to Granite Shoals. He attended Grace Episcopal Church in Llano.

Mildred Elizabeth Waldrope, 88 of Rowlett, Texas passed away Friday, January 11, 2013. She was born in Milton, Louisiana on May 10, 1924 to Louise (Savoy) Goodsell and Jerry Goodsell. Mildred was married to Jerry Waldrope on August 9, 1941 in Burnet, Texas. She had been a resident of Rowlett for the past 17 years coming from Hammond, Louisiana and Orange, Texas.
Survivors include her grandchildren, Jerri Lynn Kepley of Rowlett, Texas.

The Heart of Texas Events Center will stage our first event for the 2013 Concert and Dance Series on January 26. The concert will begin at 2:30 PM and the dance will be held from 8:00 PM until Midnight. Admission is $12 per event, or a combo ticket to both shows for $20 each.

Facing a record-breaking drought with no end in sight, the Lower Colorado River Authority has again asked the state to allow us to not release water from the Highland Lakes for most downstream farmers this year unless substantial rainfall replenishes the reservoirs. LCRA’s Board of Directors took that action Jan.

Hill Country Cats, a local nonprofit organization dedicated to humane control of the free-roaming cat population in Burnet and Llano counties, received over $10,400 in contributions in late 2012. The donations were given in response to a $2,000 challenge grant offered by the Los Angeles-based Ernest Lieblich Foundation. Individual gifts ranged in size from ten dollars to five thousand dollars.

Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service in Blanco County will sponsor a Private Applicator License training and testing program on Tuesday, January 29 at 8am in the Hoppe Room, Courthouse Annex, in Johnson City. The training program will conclude at 12:00 noon. We will resume at 1:00 p.m. with the testing.

“Dressed to the Nines.” That would be a pair of nine-point runs propelled the Llano Lady Jackets to a 45-28 win over Gatesville, January 11, and a 2-1 record in district 8-AAA play.
Burnet, at 3-0, the only unbeaten team in the league, visited Llano, January 14, after press time.
“We finally played basketball,” head coach Daryl Friedrich said of the win over the Hornets.

One of the big stories of the month was a non-story. No one was elected to be inducted into baseball’s Hall of Fame.
Barry Bonds, Sammy Sosa, and Roger Clemens did not get the required 75% of the baseball writers’ votes because of alleged steroid or performance-enhancing-drug usage.
The evidence may have been large against the trio, but nothing has ever been proven in a court of law.

A current project of the Llano County Historical Society is updating the exhibits in the Llano County Historical Museum so they are more user-friendly to visitors. Museum specialists from the State Historical Commission have provided suggestions and guidelines to improve ways to display historical items. Visits to other recently renovated museums have resulted in better usage of signage to tell the story of Llano County.
