Labor Day Weekend Packed With Excitement
Thursday, August 30, 2012 • Posted August 30, 2012

This weekend there will be no rest for the weary in Llano! Planes and boats will keep locals and visitors alike entertained throughout the Labor Day Weekend.

The Llano Municipal Airport will be hosting its 11th Annual Hammerfest aerobatic contest this weekend, September 1-2, hosted by the City of Llano.

The event will be held at the Llano Municipal Airport, located two miles north of town on Highway 16. The competition is being sponsored by Austin chapter 107 of the International Aerobatic Club, as well as local area businesses. Approximately 20 to 25 aerobatic pilots from all over Texas and surrounding states are expected to participate in the event.

The competition will begin at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 1 and continue until late afternoon. Flying will start again at 8:00 a.m. on Sunday, September 2, and continue until all categories are completed. If time allows, a Four Minute Freestyle flight for Unlimited pilots will be included on Sunday at the conclusion of the contest. The Four Minute Free allows pilots to demonstrate their flying abilities using any maneuver they wish, and includes use of smoke.

Pilots will be competing for trophies in five categories ranging in difficulty from Primary, Sportsman, Intermediate, and Advanced through Unlimited.

The general public is welcome to attend the event and watch the competition on any of the scheduled contest days. While this event is not an air show, the aerobatic sequences flown in the competition are interesting to watch as pilots demonstrate their ability to fly the maneuvers precisely and safely. Aerobatic aircraft will be on static display throughout the contest. Concessions provided by local Llano civic groups will be available both days of the event.

In addition to Hammerfest, the 2012 Wild Game Dinner, benefiting the Llano County Junior Livestock Show Association will be held on Saturday night at the Llano Community Center starting at 7pm. (See page 20 for more details!)
