The UIL Academic Team placed first in three events at Belton High School on Saturday, December 8, 2012, competing against nineteen schools. Winning the prestigious team plaque for Spelling and Vocabulary were Jackets freshman Matthew Cohen, sophomore Sterling Owen, and junior Necille Nunez by just five words over District competitor, Lampasas. Winning the gold medal in Spelling was Necille Nunez, with the silver medal won by Sterling Owen. Senior Alexa Palmer won the gold medal in Feature Writing.

Twenty Llano High School stu-dents participated in a plethora of events, and other medals were earned.

Unfortunately, a number of LHS students couldn’t be at this meet due to basketball tournaments, and they were missed, including sophomore Kasey Hairston, the reigning State Champion in Spelling and Vocabulary.

Another win was registered by freshman Kody Nelson, placing third in Number Sense coached by Jesse McWhorter. Junior Erin Hsu placed fourth in Calculator coached by Bob Vaade. Junior Becca Davis placed fourth in Editorial Writing. Winning two Lincoln Douglas debates was novice Samantha Lawrence.

The students’ next meet is in January. Sign-up will be soon at the high school. For more information on the UIL Academic program, feel free to contact Debbie Engler at dengler@llanoisd.org.
