Dear Editor,

One plus one equals one

Before you think that someone needs to go back to remedial math, let’s look at the reason for this weird math equation.

Here is the first One: How many of you senior citizens got a less than 2% increase in your Social Security? Plus, the cost of Medicare increased.

Here is the second One. Well, just remember that our wonderful, “do-nothing”, “ten-o’clock” legislators had a 5% increase. (Sure they said that they would not get paid until some budget issues were settled but they only put that increase in escrow until the agreement is reached!)

That is the first part of our equation.

Here is the next equation. This is the first one: The average citizen is lucky to work for a company that even offers a pension. Most pension programs can only be earned after TWENTY years of employment. Many thousand citizens have no retirement or health plans.

Second ONE: These same legislators get a life-time pension after only one elected term, plus receiving the very best medical care while in office.

So if we look at these bits of information, it becomes clear: both of these examples make the equation true. The first one represents the citizens of this country. The second one represents the legislators.. If you add these up, then you have: Citizen plus Legislator equals Legislator!
