LHS debaters determined to improve
Thursday, November 8, 2007 • Posted November 8, 2007

Llano High School’s debaters are looking forward to District this year. In the second year of having Ms. Angela Dziuk as their debate teacher and coach, the debate squad has attended two tournaments already to get needed experience. A summer debate camp has proven its worth in getting the young team interested and ready as well.

At the Ingram Invitational Tournament on Oct. 13, the only experienced CX debating team from Llano, Leanna Markgraf and Tiffanie Vollbreccht, had a great win over Bandera's top varsity team. The following week on Oct. 27 at the Salado High School’s “tournament That Teaches,” the novice debate team of Will Cohen and Woody Byrnes placed second. A novice Lincoln Douglas debater, Claire Byrnes, finished third. In addition, six other Llano students attended the Salado tourney to observe live debate and to obtain valuable instruction from the outstanding debate coaches, Tim Cook and Russell Kirkcey. A special thanks goes to our new guidance counselor at LHS, Nita Fields, who traveled to Salado to help Ms. Dziuk as a judge.

In addition to the debate team, Ms. Dziuk also coaches the extemporaneous speakers. Gregory Dukes won a second place trophy at the Ingram meet in that event.

Competing also at the Ingram meet was the Current Events and Literary Criticism teams coached by Shelly Anderson. Leanna Markgraf placed third in Current Events.
