Llano New Horizons encourages Adopt-A-Family Program
Wednesday, October 5, 2011 • Posted October 5, 2011

New Horizons was originally established in the early 1980s by James and Nell Hoffman as a jailhouse missionary program. In so doing, they learned that the families of the incarcerated sometimes found it difficult to meet the immediate needs of their families. The Hoffmans decision was to provide aid for utilities, food, clothing, medical needs and other necessary items. Funds came from churches, civic organizations and individuals in Llano County.

Mr. Hoffman passed away several years ago and Mrs. Hoffman continued the operation alone, but finally realized it was too much for her to handle alone. Several concerned residents of Llano met with Mrs. Hoffman and with her blessing took over the mission of New Horizon to serve Llano County residents who live within the 78643 zip code and the western part of Llano County.

The new organization was named Llano New Horizons and was incorporated as a 501@3 Non-Profit Organization. Anyone wishing to donate can send contributions to P.O. Box 107, Llano, TX 78643. Ten people who are currently on the Board of Directors are: Martha Long, Chairman; Judye Stewart, Vice-Chairman; Iline Flint, Secretary and Coordinator of Adopt-A-Family; Frances Young, Treasurer; Hatty Sagebiel, Director of Fund Raising and Grants; Hudson Long, Julia Hilbun, Sandra Slocumb, Ida Nell Schuessler and Barbara Heldridge, Directors.

Llano New Horizons also coordinates the "Adopt-A-Family" program during the Christmas season. It is a campaign that allows children to be recognized and designated to receive assistance from Llano residents, churches and organizations. School officials (teachers, nurses or counselors) identify children who are in need. The children are given a form to take home for the family/ guardians to fill out. Llano New Horizons provides the blank forms to the school officials and a Llano New Horizons representative collects the filled in forms. The information is then distributed to various churches, organizations and individuals in the community. Last year, Llano New Horizons matched up 29 families and 87 children. For those who would like to receive a family to share Christmas call (325) 247-3685 or (325) 248-2242.
