The Highland Lakes Republican Women finished the 2011-12 meeting season with a visit from the Fort Hood USO representatives, Robin Crouse and Isabel Hubbard.
Robin gave an emotion-filled presentation to those in attendance as she explained the work of the USO in the lives of the nearly 50,000 troops who are stationed at Fort Hood.
The USO maintains two day rooms for the use of the men and women stationed there. The day rooms are equipped with a TV/ Movie Area, Computer Area, Library, Game Stations, area for table games and Foos Ball or Pool Table.
Robin said that the meals that are served to the troops really become popular
in the days just before payday.
When the HLRW members asked what their club could to do to help out in serving the large number of troops who will soon be returning to Fort Hood, Robin asked them if they would mind becoming ‘Bag Ladies’ and assist the USO by providing zip lock sandwich bags to use in the distribution of the donated pastries. They also have need of the 13 gallon size trash bags.
The HLRW has placed receptacles in the Post Offices in Llano County to collect the bags that will then be delivered to the USO at Fort Hood during the month of June.
HLRW will begin its 2012-13 monthly meetings with a very special meeting on Sept 11, 2012. The club meets the second Tuesday of each month from January through May and September through December. They meet for a social period at 6:00 p.m. in the meeting room of either the Llano or Kingsland Libraries. The social period is followed with a guest speaker or other program at 6:30 p.m. and a business meeting at 7:00 p.m. Guests are always welcome.
