DPS Officer Jendrzey (kneeling) and Officer Chatagnier survey the wreckage of a vehicle that fled a traffic stop at high speed on Sunday night.  Gregory Jaffers of Austin, the driver of the 2002 Toyota Avalon, was killed in the firey one car accident about five miles east of Llano on Hwy 71.

A young man from Austin made a decision Sunday night that cost him his life.

Gregory Neal Jaffers, 21, was traveling east on Hwy 71 in the City of Llano when Llano Police officer Allyn Rub’s radar clocked him exceeding the speed limit. Rub pulled Jaffers’ vehicle over to the side of the road east of Llano Junior High School around 9:45 p.m., and then Jaffers made a tragic decision. He hit the gas pedal and took off.

Llano Police Chief James Schilling said Officer Rub pursued Jaffers’ vehicle, and even though the patrol car hit speeds of 110 miles per hour on the one lane road, Rub could not catch up with the fleeing car. Having lost sight of Jaffers, Rub terminated his pursuit.

Rub had called for assistance from the Llano County
