Brrr! The weather has really been a surprise this year – surprising in that we are actually getting some “winter” weather. The word around the library from everyone that comes in is that they are ready for spring! There’s a lot of talk of gardening and yard work, possibility of great wildflowers thanks to the rain we’ve had, and of course, the return of the migratory birds.
If you are a birdwatcher and/or you’re readying your birdhouses for this year’s nesting, the Lakeshore Library has a program that will be of interest to you. Master Gardener Robert Yantis will present “Living with Purple Martins” on Tuesday, February 9 at 2:30 p.m. While the purple martins depend on humans for their housing, protection and care, we humans also benefit from their help in controlling insects and fending off crows. Mr. Yantis will talk about multi-compartment housing for the martins as well as methods to help limit damage by other animals and birds such as squirrels and hawks. He will also have photos to show of baby martins maturing in the nests. You can call the library at 325-379-1174 to reserve a seat.
The Kingsland Library is hosting a sweet event this month – a “Sweetheart Soiree” – on Tuesday, February 9! So if chocolate is your passion or you just know you have the best brownie or dessert bar around, this is for you! This is a contest open to all bakers who wish to enter their brownie or dessert bar for a chance to win a sweet prize – a $50 gift certificate donated by the Copper Kettle in Kingsland. The judges from the “Christmas Cookie Crumble” will be returning to judge again – Judge Linda Ballard, Tina Jones and Krystal Alley, Director and Assistant Director of Kids Connection Learning Center. Stop by the Kingsland Library for complete contest rules and entry form.
Since Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow this year it’s predicted we are in for six more weeks of winter weather – perfect for the Friends of the Llano Library’s Annual “Souper” Supper on Thursday, February 11. All of the Friends members and library staff will be cooking up a large assortment of soups – from Ned Woodal’s gumbo to Paul Paxton’s Mushroom Soup, and every type of soup in between – Chicken Noodle, Italian Wedding Soup, Vegetable Beef and more! We mention Ned and Paul’s soup because there is a little “friendly” competition going on – well, actually, a “Soup Smack Down” – with each claiming their soup will be the best and their pot empty the fastest. So we will turn this into a contest of sorts and let you be the judge and choose your favorite among all of the varieties. The lids will be opened on the soup pots at 5:00 p.m. and we will serve until all is gone. The price is by donation and you can taste and sample all the soups you would like and/or have a big bowl full. The proceeds from this event will go toward furnishing the Tween Area in the Library.
Recently, the Kingsland Library received news from Central Texas Library System that they are one of the twelve libraries selected to receive a Workforce Workstation computer for job searches. This computer will be linked to the Texas Workforce Commission and will be loaded with software designed to help with job searches, resumes, and applications for public assistance. The new workstation will be in place soon. Another resource offered by the Llano County Library System through the Texas State Library is the Premium Resume Builder and Career Center that you can access through the library’s web site at www.llano-library-system.net. This program allows you to set up a free account and have access to the many features available.
