1950 - 2010

David Charles Luckenbach, of Sandy Harbor, passed away from cancer on Feb. 23, 2010 in Marble Falls at the age of 59. David was born on Dec. 17, 1950 in Falfurrias to Louis Luckenbach and Helen (Hanson) Luckenbach. David is survived by his wife Alison Pryce, daughter Sarah (Luckenbach) Hoffman, her husband Benny Hoffman and their children: Clare, Matthew, Ryan and David Hoffman, all of Llano. He is also survived by his father, Louis Luckenbach and wife Loraine of Kingsland and brothers: Jim Luckenbach and wife Julie of Carrollton, Mike Luckenbach and wife Karen of Kingsland, Tommy Luckenbach of Marble Falls, Johnny Luckenbach and wife Tami of Marble Falls and Larry Luckenbach of Marble Falls, in addition to many other loving relatives. David was preceded in death by his mother, Helen, in 1985.

David spent most of his childhood growing up with his brothers in Alice. He returned to Falfurrias in time to graduate high school in 1969. On Jan. 7, 1981, David married Janice Lorrain in Austin. They then moved to Ava, Mo. to make their home. Their marriage produced one daughter, Sarah (Luckenbach) Hoffman. During the following decade, David and Janice spent many years as organic growers and supported their family in this way. David was famous for always searching for new opportunities and methods to make their life on the farm easier. One example was a solar powered golf cart he made for carrying things to and from the garden. David also built their home’s electrical system based on solar panels and the water system based on a hydraulic ram with passive solar water heating. In 1986 David graduated with honors from Southwest Missouri State University with a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics and a minor in Computer Science. After the marriage ended in 1993, David moved to Texas. Sarah later came to live with him, and they relocated to Llano soon after. David established Luckenbach Lawn Care and cared for many local properties until his daughter left home in 2001. In the following years, David established a business as a certified sailing instructor and the owner of SailingTexas.com. David chose sailing instruction as a career because he wanted to do something he truly loved for the rest of his life. In addition to teaching sailing lessons, David often participated in racing sailboats for fun. He won many sailboat races throughout Texas and beyond and was the Texas Centerboard champion in 2004. David married Alison Pryce on Aug. 5, 2006 after a courtship that followed their first date at a sailing regatta on Lake Travis. Sailing continued to be a very special part of their life together. David met many wonderful people who eventually became dear friends through sailing. David’s family and friends will fondly remember him as being interesting, intelligent, enterprising and resourceful. During his lifetime, David never missed a chance to be helpful and offer advice to those around him. He will be missed.

Private memorial services will be held on March 7. Memorials in honor of David may be made to the family by visiting www.sailingtexas.com/cpaypal. E-mail condolences to David’s family may be made to David’s personal email address davidluc@earthlink.net.
