Granite Shoals Police Chief J.P. Wilson remained in critical condition Tuesday following a motorcycle accident at midday Saturday on RR 1431 in Kingsland.

Dorothy Thomas, of Kingsland failed to yield right of way as she made a turn in front of the motorcycle driven by Wilson, according to Department of Public Safety Trooper Brian Barnes.

“He (Chief Wilson) laid the bike down and suffered head injuries,” said Barnes. “He was not wearing a helmet.” There was no contact between the two vehicles.

A press release from Granite Shoals Police Captain Phillip Brizendine said that Chief Wilson, 35, was driving his personal motorcycle and was off-duty at the time of the accident. He laid the cycle down in an evasive measure, according to the release.

The accident occurred near Kingsland Hills Care Center in the 3700 block of RR 1431 as Thomas, a woman in her seventies, was traveling east in a four-door Chevy passenger car and Wilson was westbound.

The call on the accident came in at 12:56 p.m., according to Trooper Barnes. Llano Emergency Medical Service and the Llano County Sheriff's Office assisted as Wilson was airlifted from the nearby Kingsland Community Center to the Crash Intensive Care Unit of University Medical Center (UMC) at Brackenridge in Austin. He was later transferred to Intensive Care.

According to a family friend, Wilson was initially placed on a ventilator. GSPD said he sustained a head fracture in the area of his right ear.
