The Llano Uplift Archeological Society (LUAS) will have a meeting May 14, at 7 p.m. at the LCRA Nightengale Archaeological Center (NAC) in Kingsland.

The theme for this month’s presentation by Dr. D. Clark Wernecke will be “The Gault Site: What has it told us so far?”

The Gault Site in Central Texas has drawn a great deal of international attention. More than 60 percent of all excavated Clovis artifacts are from the site and only a small percentage of the total area has been investigated.

Recently the site was acquired by a non-profit, the Gault School of Archaeological Research, and research on this site has resumed. At the same time the staff of the Gault Project have been analyzing the more than 1.2 million artifacts excavated up to 2002. This talk will cover some of what was discovered to date.

Clark Wernecke is the Project Director of the Gault Project and Executive Director of the new Gault School of Archaeological Research. Dr. Wernecke bring a unique blend of scholarship and experience to the project with degrees in history, business, and anthropology.

He has considerable experience in business and has specialized in the management of large archaeological projects. Dr. Wernecke has worked in the Middle East, Mesoamerica, the American Southeast and Southwest, and Texas. In addition to his work on Gault, he is currently working on archaeological data from the Mexican War and early Texas architecture.
