Earning an opportunity to compete at the UIL Academic Meet at U.T. in Austin is no small accomplishment.
Four Llano High School seniors: Claire Byrnes, Chrissie Spangler, Jacob Wright, and Geoffrey Sanders, had that opportunity on Friday, May 2, and Saturday, May 3. Claire competed in Spelling/Vocabulary, Chrissie wrote a feature story in the Journalism division, Jacob competed in Computer Applications, while Geoffrey competed in Physics.
Claire Byrnes came home with a smile, because she medaled in Vocabulary and Spelling.
Thirty students competed against Claire at the State level in Class 3A, so finishing sixth was excellent. This contest demands that the students learn 300 different definitions and 1500 words.
Since her sophomore year, Claire has competed at Invitational, on-line meets, District, and Regional meets while working with her spelling team members, John Grimshaw, Barrett Clifton, Kallie Geistweidt, and Amber Ward. The Spelling Coach is Mrs. Debbie Engler.
Jacob Wright scored enough points to finish seventh in Computer Applications.
Under the tutelage of Mrs. Emily Allen, Jacob has represented Llano High School well.
Geoffrey Sanders, coached by Mrs. Christy Alexander, finished third in Biology, but in the overall Science contest, he did not medal. However, with a strong field of 30 fellow contestants, he scored well.
Chrissie Spangler placed seventh in the challenging Feature Writing contest.
Mrs. Engler also coaches this event.
