The Mason Country Opry will be at the Odeon Theater in downtown Mason. The show is May 22 and will begin at 7:30 p.m. and admission is $8 per person. Tickets will be on sale at the door.
Jody Nix’s Texas Championship Fiddler Robert Weeks will headline the show.
Robert Weeks started playing fiddle when he was ten years old. His parents gave him a fiddle for Christmas, and his dad, Robert Weeks, Sr., taught him a couple of songs that night.
Weeks quickly learned and soon became interested in fiddle contests and Texas fiddle music. His mom and dad started taking the family everywhere from Nashville, Tenn., to Weiser, Idaho, and all over the state of Texas everyweekend to compete in contests.
Over the next seven years, Weeks won hundreds of contests including five Junior World Championships, four Junior State Championships, and at the age of seventeen, was the youngest to win the overall State Championship in Hallettsville.
Week’s dad passed away when he was fourteen, and he struggled to keep playing without him around. Week’s mom started taking him for lessons for about six months, which helped him get his focus back and continue playing.
After his dad passed away, his mother, Bonnie, devoted her life to making sure he was at every contest possible. When he graduated high school, he started experimenting with dance fiddling. His first job in a dance band was with Kenneth Doyle, and he played dances with him for a year or so.
Weeks was then approached to join a Nashville recording artist and spent the next two years touring with Decca artist Shane Stockton. This took him to 38 states and included touring on the George Strait Music Festival. Because the Nashville scene and its music were not for him, Robert became frustrated.
As fate would have it, Weeks received a call from Jody Nix, who he has played fiddle for since the age of 21. Nix has blessed Weeks with the opportunity to play traditional country music and has become a great friend as well. He continues to play with Nix and the Texas Cowboys across the Southwest.
Weeks has been influenced by several greats in the Country Music business including Tommy Jackson, Johnny Gimble, Jody Nix, Keith Coleman, Tiny Moore, Tony Booth, Duke Ellington, Scott Joplin, Artie Shaw, Glen Miller, Ben Hogan and Byron Nelson.
Other entertainers on the show will include Heart of Texas Recording artist Justin Trevino, Sammy Geistweidt, Kelsey Behrens, Benny Fred Kothmann and Shane Lively. Tracy Pitcox will MC the show.
