There has never been much activity on the west side of the Courthouse Square, however, the rough-hewn marble slab building at 813 Berry Street in the early days was a busy place, known as BonTon Bath and Barber Shop, where dusty cowboys cleaned up with a hot bath and shave for a night on the town.
It was built by W.A.H. Miller in the late 1880s. In 1890 T.P. Justice purchased the property providing the only commercial bath facilities in town until about 1914. Then in 1916, Mr. Justice and his son changed the building into a paint and variety store until they moved to the east side of the square.
For many years, before moving to its present location, The Llano News was located in a building to the south. The newspaper was first established as the Iron City News in 1880 by A.T. Maupin and O.F. Golson.
Through the years the newspaper has been handed from editor to editor. Some of the editors of The Llano News have been Maupin and Maupin, W.D. and George Cowen; W.A.H. Miller, M.C. Wilkes, J.H. McLean; John C. Oatman; W.B. Collin; Bill Collins; John Cardwell; Louis Riddell, Hal Cunningham; Walter Buckner and present publisher and owner Ken Wesner.
Wesner purchased the historic building and hopefully plans to renovate it with the original facade.
Main Street architect, Howard Langner was recently in Llano on a site visit, toured the building, and will have a proposed drawing some time in the near future.
