George Eldridge Harlan, Sr., 88, of Tow, formerly of Austin, passed away August 5, 2010. He was born to William Steve and Martha Emily (Smith) Harlan on June 10, 1922 in Junction, Texas.
Mr. Harlan grew up in Austin, Bee Cave, and Woodlake where he was active in Future Farmers of America (FFA) in School. He proudly served his country in the United States Army during World War II. He was stationed in the Philippines and the occupation force in Japan. He guarded prisoners and was fired upon. He married Billie Pearl Richardson February 12, 1949 and settled in Central Austin. Mr. Harlan retired from the City of Austin in 1994. He loved to barbecue and was a skilled woodworker. Mr. Harlan was a member of the Hyde Park Baptist Church in Austin where he was an usher, and was active in several other groups. He was also a member of the Hill Country Masonic Lodge.
He is survived by his children, Dorothy Anderson, George Harlan, Jr. and wife Terri, Gordon Harlan and wife Verna, grandchildren, Bret Anderson, Blake Anderson, Martin Macklin, Gene Macklin, Sandy Macklin, Shauna Thayer, Ryan Harlan, Leslie DesJardin, Lindsie Harlan, Misty Molina, Crystal Caffey-Young, and numerous great-grandchildren. brothers, Bud and Roy also survive.
In addition to his mother, father, wife, four brothers and his sister, he is preceded in death by his daughter, Paula Macklin.
A visitation was held 10:00 a.m -5:00 p.m. Monday August 9, 2010 at Putnam Funeral Home in Kingsland. Funeral services will be held 1:00 p.m. Tuesday August 10, 2010 at Hyde Park Baptist Church with Reverend Dan Gardner officiating. Interment will follow at Austin Memorial Park.
