I attended the August 12th meeting at the LanTex regarding the Historical Preservation Zoning Ordinance. My family has owned property on the square for over 70 years. Eight years ago we bought an additional historic building on the square. After listening to the presentation I am in favor of the proposed ordinance. It only includes exterior renovations and there is no mandate to make any changes at all. When my grandfather was county commissioner his precinct included what is now Horseshoe Bay. When he looked over the original plats he was sorry to see the demise of ranch land, and frankly thought it was overly ambitious. However he worked with the developer because he understood that this project was good for the economic development of the county.

While on a much smaller scale I believe that the proposed ordinance is also good for the promotion of the City of Llano. By working with the individual property owners the City can promote Llano much more effectively than any individual could. As a property rights advocate the last thing I want to see is government intervention. However In this case the property owners will be working in partnership with the city for the betterment of everyone and I believe this will ultimately increase property values. I also know that there is a concern about redundancy with existing ordinances. Even if this is true I don’t see what harm that causes. Hopefully everyone can work together, in partnership, to come up with a plan that benefits each property owner and the community as a whole.

Dear Editor,

I am a property owner on Hwy. 16 South. We have maintained our property, inside and out, in a customary and acceptable standard. I have been greatly distressed on the matter of the historic committee trying to take over private property.

While it may be of some benefit to some people to emphasize the historic aspect of historic Llano, the regular people living here and making a living during these hard economic times may not benefit from the long-term vision.

If you are going to attack the historic buildings and tell them what they can or cannot do, what will be next, residential property? The land of the free is being taken over by a self-appointed committee.

What would happen to my property rights? We should all have the right to decide. I request that we be taken off your historic district map. OPT ME OUT.
