Master Gardeners Mary Ellen and Michael Goff (shown at their seminar last June) will present "The Fascinating World of Honey Bees" in an informative free public program from the Kingsland Garden Club on Friday, September 10.

The exciting life of honey bees will be covered in a lecture especially designed for gardeners. The presentation will increase your appreciation of the bees and the important role that pollination plays in our lives and our gardens.

Taught by Mary Ellen and Michael Goff, Certified Beekeepers and members of Highland Lakes Master Gardener Association, attendees will learn about the honeybees’ home life, as well as how they collect pollen and make honey. The presentation includes fun facts about honeybees. Did you know honeybees were not native to the U.S.? Or that a single bee would have to travel 55,000 miles (twice around the world) visiting 5,000,000 flowers to produce a single pound of honey? That honey contains vitamins A, C, D, E, B1, B2, B6, and B12? Or that honey is the only food that never spoils.

Each June, the Goffs teach an in-depth class, in conjunction with the AgriLife Extension Office, which includes hive construction for those who want to enrich their yards by maintaining bees, an exciting hobby that is growing in popularity and has become absolutely crucial to today’s honeybee survival.

The program will start at 1:45 but you are invited to join us at 1 pm for the Club meeting at the Kingsland Library. The Garden Club and Master Gardeners have some wonderful new programs free to the public in the Highland Lakes area starting in September. We have our new lineup posted at http://yantislakesidegardens. so you can make your plans to attend.
