Cheryll Mabray, Llano County Attorney, her staff and Texas District and County Attorneys Association are proud to announce their Annual Summer Regional Update.
The can’t miss legal seminar of the season is coming to town. Whether a prosecutor, law enforcement officer, judge, probation officer, defense attorney or other criminal justice professional, this training is needed to stay on top of the game from the crime scene to the courtroom.
The two topics to be presented are “Search and Seizure” and “Confessions” on Friday, Aug. 1, at the Ben E. Keith, Budweiser Distributing, 1604 Bessemer (State Highway 16 north) in Llano.
“Search and Seizure” begins at 8:30 a.m. to noon and “Confessions” will run from 1:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. Each session is worth three hours of TCLEOSE, MCLE credit and costs $50 (both sessions are $100).
The most frequent contact between law enforcement officers and citizens is during traffic stops, so it’s no surprise that search and seizure issues spring from these transactions. This session will update attendees on the current statutes and caselaw in this area so that no legal issues will be overlooked or cases dismissed due to illegally seized evidence.
Plus, every attendee will receive a copy of the TDCAA publication “Traffic Stops,” a $25 value, to keep these ideas and issues close at hand and ready for the courtroom.
Even in today’s “CSI” age, there is still nothing more powerful than a confession. Every jury wants to hear the defendant admit his crime.
This session focuses on how to legally, ethically, and effectively get a confession and avoid lengthy litigation over how it was obtained.
Using recorded phone calls, the Internet, and the backseat of a patrol car, learn how to get the best confessions admitted at trial. Additionally, every attendee will receive a copy of the TDCAA publication “Confessions,” a $25 value.
The faculty for the 2008 Summer Regional series not only has decades of prosecutorial experience, but also years of dedicated service as trainers for TDCAA and other state and national training organizations.
They hail from all over Texas and have come together this summer to give unmatched expertise and enthusiasm in these trainings.
Two teams are covering the Search and Seizure issues: Tom Bridges, a retired district attorney for Aransas and San Patricio Counties, and Jack Choate, a first assistant criminal district attorney for Walker County; Ted Wilson, an assistant district attorney for Harris County, and John Jordan, an assistant district attorney for Harris County.
For the Confessions issues will be covered by John Bradley, a district attorney for Williamson County.
To register or for more information call the Llano County Attorney’s Office at (325) 247-7733 or TDCAA at (512) 474-2436. Registration is available at the door but pre-registration is recommended.
