In case you read here a week ago that Brandon Walters was heading to Wills Point, either you need better glasses or the reporter needs to review his blue-book notes on, “Journalism, a lazy man’s journey through life.”

The translation of the above is Walters, in what some would call a gutty decision, phoned the folks at Wills Point and told them, “I’ve changed my mind.” He’s not taking the job as head girls basketball coach.

“I just never felt that comfortable after I accepted it,” Walters explained. “Once I decided I didn’t want it and let them know that, I had a good night’s sleep.”

So, here’s where we stand: the Walters’ family will go to Winnsboro, which was the plan all the time; he may not coach this year, and his wife, Kara, may not teach in the elementary school.

They’ll simply get other jobs. (The reason that Wills Point was a possibility is it’s about 45 miles southwest of Winnsboro.)

Here are the positives for the latest decision: Brandon’s parents live in Winnsboro, and Kara’s are in nearby Emory.

Their son, Blake, will be a junior, and he and his parents like the idea of him going to Winnsboro High, playing sports there, and being reunited with old friends.

No, there’s no chance, now, anyway, of Walters replacing Buddy Hawkins, the highly successful coach of the multi-state-champion Lady Raiders.

Hawkins and the Raiders beat Llano, 60-52, March 1, 2001, in the Jackets’ first-ever Final Four game at the Erwin Center. Winnsboro won state 1999 through ‘01.

Walters had five excellent seasons in Llano; he resigned in May. We wish him well and, although some would make legitimate arguments to the contrary, we applaud his and Kara’s position of placing family first.
