The anniversary of the shooting death of Mike Allred will be marked with an event -- the 2008 Candle Light Vigil-- on the evening of Aug. 24 at Kingsland Community Park.

The event is sponsored by Hill Country Survivors of Violent Crime, the group which holds the annual Tree of Angels observance for victims in the 33rd and 424th Judicial District.

“Last year, the small city of Marble Falls felt the crushing impact and witnessed the domino effect that violence brings when it made national news on Aug. 24,” said a HCSVC press release. “A lone gunman murdered Mike Allred, four people in Jonestown and 1 in Pennsylvania. Not only do the immediate families and friends of these people suffer, but the cities, counties and states as well. Lives forever changed by a senseless act of violence.”

The anniversary will be marked this year by friends and family of Allred along with families of victims before them.

The 2008 Candle Light Vigil will be a time, the press release said, to come together and reflect on the fondest memories of their loved ones lost, in support of one another.

It honors all Texas victims and survivors of violent crime and their families, especially in the four counties of the local judicial district, Llano, Burnet, Blanco and San Saba. The HCSVC said it plans to continue the vigil as a tradition to offer solace to victims and families.

“The ceremony itself is a reverent forum and uplifting celebration of life helping to give support and solace to help heal and comfort in time of loss,” continued the HCSVC statement. “Above all, it is a celebration of life, an expression of the realization of love and a time set aside to reflect, honor and remember ... a memorable tradition observed throughout Texas communities.”

The 2008 Candle Light Vigil is opened to all victims, survivors, friends and families as well as those who have a loved one missing.

It will be held overlooking Lake LBJ. Attendees will enter through Kingsland Community Park, formerly Lion’s Club Park and should bring a lawn chair or blanket for seating. Gates will open at 8 p.m.

“It is our mission and hope to provide these members of our community with a memorable evening to honor and remember those who have forever had their life changed by violence,” said the invitation from HCSVC. “We consider this an honor and look forward to this evening.”
