FREDERICKSBURG—John McEnroe, the tennis star turned announcer, used to say in his numerous heated moments: “You can’t be serious!” Jalen Bauman, the man who was to be the centerpiece of the Llano High football Jackets (1-3), lasted one play on the Billies’ Homecoming Night, and the LHS rivals proceeded to carve out a 30-0 victory. Bauman carried the ball on the first play from scrimmage and injured his right knee.

It was Wednesday morning, September 3, and Mack Brown wanted to talk football. And that he did, before a most appreciative crowd of 250 at the Horseshoe Bay Sports Club. “The playoffs are good,” the UT-coach-turned-ESPN- analyst said. “The fans deserve the best teams.” College football will wind up with a Final Four instead of a Final Two, but Brown would like eight in the tournament. “People get mad if you don’t play tough teams,” we were advised about non-conference foes, bu ...

BANGS—The Lady Jackets, with some vocal encouragement from their coach, opened Llano’s day-night, doubleheader sweep of the Dragons, September 5, with a comeback win in volleyball. The football team got the Ladies’—“see what’s possible when you put your mind to it”—message, and also won. I asked John Black what he said to the team when a 13-4 lead in Game 4 had slipped to 14-9?

BANGS—So much was memorable about this visit to the Brownwood area on the first Friday night in September, most of all the 41-21 final. Aaron Moss reminded people the running game should not be as hard to embrace as a tuxedo. Holden Simpson was more accurate than Annie Oakley. And the defense?

It was a fine start for the Jacket cross-country team, as the youngsters did well defending their turf in the September 4 Llano Invitational. Grayson Freeman, second in his division, and Elainia Keeney, fifth in hers, are the Black and Orange standard bearers until further notice. It was the beginning of what will be—literally—a four-year run for Keeney.

On a hot, balmy Thursday evening the Bangs Dragons rolled into Llano with the intention of taking down the Llano Junior Varsity Yellow Jacket football team. That intention was all but snuffed out in the first five minutes of the ball game when the Jackets took an early 6 point lead.

Volleyball matches are settled by either 2 out of 3 in Junior Varsity, or 3 out of 5 for varsity. In the case of the Lady JV Jackets on Friday night in Bangs, it was the best 2 out of 3. Although it is called 1 match, the 3 games can be as different as night and day, this was the situation in Bangs.

For the last 14 years, Christ-Yoder Animal Shelter in Buchanan Dam has served Llano and Burnet Counties with the help of generous donations. Unfortunately, donations and memberships have slowed, and the center is now faced with the possibility of having to close its doors in the near future. Christ-Yoder is an open admission facility, which means that they take in all animals, regardless of condition, resulting in almost 40,000 animals passing through its kennels since it opened its doors in ...

Dear Editor, I want to read the TCEQ report Mayor Virdell keeps referencing. You know, the one where he claims that of 2000 water systems in Texas, Llano is 25th “most concerning” due to a single water source. Although fond of throwing around information supposedly from this report, he has not seen it. Since it appears to be the basis for his claim that we are in dire straits, it seems he would have a copy in hand to support his claims.

Dear Editor, Where were the people who could answer our questions at the August 28 Town Hall Meeting on Water? Why did they not have someone from TCEQ? Why did they not have someone there from the LCRA? The Mayor and the City Manager supposedly have meetings with these people, but the citizens of Llano are expected to pay for the projects and have a right to know the truth.
