The Llano City Council took care of several routine business items at its meeting Monday night, but the most interesting items on the agenda will be need further study before any decision is made. Council members approved closing Berry Street between Ollie and Lampasas from noon to 5 p.m. on December 21 to accommodate the blood bank.
Sheriff’s Deputy Eric Van Pelt was injured and his patrol car wrecked when he hit a cow while responding to a call in southwestern Llano County Saturday night. The chain of events began with a one-vehicle rollover which apparently knocked down part of a fence along FM 2323 (Prairie Mountain Road).
Dense fog prevented a parachute jump at the Grand Opening of Fredericksburg’s newly-expanded Museum of the Pacific War, and the arrival of George and Barbara Bush was delayed for almost an hour when their plane was forced to land in Kerrville instead of Fredericksburg, but the crowd of more than 3,000 that filled Austin Street Monday morning greeted the former president and his wife exuberantly when they finally arrived to cut the ceremonial ribbon. For many of the visiting dign ...
On May 21, 1998, a Llano County jury found Bobby Wayne Woods guilty of murdering an 11 year old girl in Granbury. The judge sentenced Woods to death. On December 3, 2009, Woods was executed by the State of Texas. Woods was tried in Llano County on a change of venue from Hood County due to the publicity the case generated in the Granbury community. Woods’ conviction and sentence have been reviewed by appellate courts for various legal reasons over the past 11 years.
AUSTIN – Due to current drought conditions, the Lower Colorado River Authority will not lower Inks Lake this winter. Inks Lake is one of the smaller pass-through lakes in the chain of six Highland Lakes. Several lake-area organizations and residents submitted requests to LCRA in September for a drawdown to allow for dock repair and maintenance.

No one named Baker made the 8-3A All-District football teams, but a Baker’s Dozen from Llano won coveted spots on the first and second squads. It’s not actually 13 Jackets, because some earned double recognition. The envelopes, please. Seth Graham was one who made the first team on both sides of the ball.
How bad was the start? Tiger Woods didn’t start off any worse at 2:30 one morning. Jessica Jendrzey must have felt like Penn or Sanchez had used her as a sparring partner. Exaggerating? The team to be referred to as Llano or Lady Jackets opened with a quick basket against Boerne on the first night of December.
It was just a little ol’ contest in another non-district tournament, that offers more games to be played than there are days in the event. The 1:00 PM start time, December 3, was perfect for retirees and reporters who actually get paid to watch the action. It never means much; it’s only preparation for district which doesn’t arrive for about another year—literally. All of that is poppycock, a criticism I’ve received when I didn’t even admit to it, a ...
LHS Grad is a Lone Star Star
To be even a walk-on for sports in college is a big deal; to make the team is a huge achievement; to be honored as a First Team all anything is over the top. Kyle Hopf got his foot in the door and did it all. The Llano High School graduate of 2005 has been chosen as the All-South-Division punter in the Lone Star Conference.
Girls’ Memories from Merkel
We don’t know where the Llano Lady basketball Jackets spent Thanksgiving weekend, and we haven’t learned where they’ll use their passports during the Christmas break, but it can be told, some of the between-time was on location in Merkel, which is just west of Abilene. I know Merkel is not huge, but neither is its neighbor, Tuscola, and just think how much attention it will get January 7. Llano played five games, December 3-5, but none deserves as much attention as t ...

One of several things I forgot to write about last week was the historic celebration at the newly-expanded Museum of the Pacific War in Fredericksburg. That turned out to be one of the highlights in an amazing week for me; please bear with me as I tell you about my adventures. I should interject here that I got an advance copy of Jenny Taylor’s new CD from her brother, Justin Simpson.

History
Referring to the Work Day on the Castell Road the previous week, The Llano News announced on January 20, 1916, that “Calloused Hands (are) a Badge of Honor.” “There were many sore men in Llano last Friday night,” the story reported, and “some have not yet recovered.” About 100 men and high school boys spent the day working with picks and shovels to repair the rough dirt road. Editor Wilkes announced sadly that reporter Wallace Wever had resigned aft ...

We invite you to enjoy the sights and sounds of the holiday season this evening. The Christmas Stroll takes visitors on a walk thru Llano’s historic downtown district stopping at several area churches where each church presents their own unique Christmas program and message.

Doug and Cyndi Suggs would like to thank all those in the community for stopping by their open house. It was the biggest crowd ever. If you missed this year plan to come by next year. It is always the first Sunday in December. The Hill Country Toy Run was held last Saturday for the Children of Cherokee Home.
The Main Street Program compliments all the wonderful Llano merchants around the square who participated in the Christmas Store Front Contest. The entries were fabulous and made it very difficult to select winners. There were seventeen entries, which certainly made a community statement celebrating the Christmas season, along with the lighted decorations on our historic courthouse grounds.
