Almost seventy concerned citizens crowded into the Llano County Law Enforcement Center Monday afternoon for a public hearing on the new floodplain map commissioned by the Federal Emergency Management Agency. FEMA had been expected to advertise its floodplain map in local newspapers some time in October or November, and County Judge Wayne Brascom told the audience that the hearing had been planned as a response to the ads.
The Llano ISD School Board considered a wide variety of issues at its December 9 meeting, from the selection of cheerleaders and the disposal of obsolete items to a long-range plan to close the achievement gap for English Language Learners. The meeting opened with recognition for four exceptional LHS athletes. Two local businesses reported being burglarized on Dec. 8. Later that day, three people were arrested on warrants by the Llano Police Department for the burglaries and booked into the Llano County Jail. William Arthur Sobley, Roy Lee Nobles and Tara Laci Hearn, all of Llano, are charged with burglarizing Chrissy’s Homestyle Bakery and The Cow Patty Patch. HAMILTON—Don’t underestimate the good time you can have in Hamilton during a long weekend—especially when it results in four wins and a championship in the Bulldog Invitational. The Llano boys left the campus, 45 miles north of Lampasas, with a handsome trophy and a 9-4 record for the first month of the season. “It was a good tournament,” head coach Shannon Taylor acknowledged with understandable pride.

1947 - 2009
Alton Ray Frazier age 62 of Llano passed away on Saturday Dec. 12, 2009. Alton was born on March 21, 1947 in Houston to Alton Lewis Frazier and Mildred (Garrett) Frazier. After graduating from high school, he joined the United States Army in 1966 and served until 1969. He then enlisted into the United States National Guard and served from 1974 to 1983.

Billy Gene Talley, age 70 of Llano passed away on Monday, Dec. 7, 2009. He was born on Dec. 28, 1938 in Llano County to Luby Lon Talley and Ima Frances (Reagor) Talley. He married Betty Jean Harden June 13, 1958 in Llano. She preceded him in death in 1999.

Elton Ray Meguire age 73 of Llano passed away on Saturday, Dec. 12, 2009. He was born on July 23, 1936 in Llano County to William B. Meguire and Elsie Lavada (Herridge) Meguire. He lived in Llano for ten years moving from Houston. Elton served his country in the United States Navy and was of the Church of Christ faith.

Fred Franklin Fuller, 65, of Llano and formerly of Port O’Conner passed away Dec. 9, 2009. He was born to Fred James and Ruth Frances (McGaraty) Fuller on Oct. 5, 1944 in Telferner. Mr. Fuller was a heavy equipment mechanic repairing anything from commercial equipment to boats. He married Betty Jo Hasdorff on July 20, 1964 in Pegasus Negros, Mexico.

Freddie Young, age 89, of Sunrise Beach passed away on Saturday Dec.12, 2009 in Kingsland. She was born on March 24, 1920 in Lufkin to Ray Kimmey and Lula (Carpenter) Kimmey. Freddie married Boyce Finley Young in May of 1938 in Diboll. They were married for 57 years. Freddie was married when she was a junior in high school she finished high school and graduated salutatorian of her class. She retired as a secretary in the airline industry.

John L. Bauman of Llano County passed away Saturday, Dec. 12, 2009 at the age of 87. He was born to Olga and Max Bauman Dec. 5, 1922 in Cherokee. John served his country in the Army Air Force during World War II. He married Laverl Clark in Odessa and worked as a plant manager with Shell Oil Company.

Michael Bruce Pepin, age 50 of Kingsland passed away on Thursday, Dec. 3, 2009. He was born on Jan. 15, 1959 in Brownfield to John Pepin and Cleo Hazel (Scoggins) Pepin. He lived in Kingsland for 12 years moving here from Levelland. Survivors include his father John Pepin of Escanaba, Mich., a brother Chris Pepin of Kingsland, a sister Debra Flores of Levelland, a niece Jessica Pepin of Big Spring and six nephews.

Shirley Diane Routh age 52 of Buchanan Dam passed away on Thursday, Dec. 10, 2009. She was born Jan. 7, 1957 in Manilla, Arkansas to Mary Louise and Harold (Sonny) Espinosa. Shirley was a retired owner and operator of a local swimming pool maintenance company in the Horseshoe Bay area.

On our early dismissal day before the Christmas break, Llano High School will be hosting ExcelLHS Day (or Excels Day). The morning of December 18 will be devoted to celebrating student successes and achievements. This celebration will carry a Renaissance theme and many exciting events will be taking place to highlight our young “Renaissance” men and women. Students and staff will be wearing Renaissance costumes or a beautiful t-shirt designed by resident artist, Dayna Hain ...
Tim Henderson and Bill Ward, two prominent Texas songwriters and folk festival veterans, will be featured at Songwriters in the Round, Thursday, December 17, at the Famous Fuel Coffee House, 106 East Main St., in Llano. Henderson has performed numerous times at the Kerrville Folk Festival and has had dozens of songs recorded by noted Texas performers.
Twenty 4-H members from Llano County exhibited their public speaking and cooking skills at the very first District 7 4-H Food Challenge in Coleman on December 3. Teams had been practicing for three weeks to prepare for the contest. The Food Challenge requires participants to prepare a dish on site using the ingredients provided, utilizing a standard set of cooking equipment provided by each team.
Llano County was well represented at the District 7 4-H Nutrition Quiz Bowl in San Angelo on December 9. The senior team, consisting of Woody Byrnes, Amy Center, and Jessica Smarr, placed first, qualifying them to compete at State 4-H Roundup in June. Two junior teams competed this year. The team consisting of Cole Perkins, Taylor Sorenson, and Kasey Hairston placed third.
In 2003, Don Paul Freeman accepted a three month job on the island of St. Kitts in the West Indies to manage and build a fiber optic ring around the island. Six and half years later, Freeman has returned to his home in Llano.
