County Judge Wayne Brascom hosted a meeting to enable Senator John Cornyn to hear area leaders’ concerns firsthand. Mayor Mike Reagor attended the meeting at Lone Star Coffee Shop in Llano, as did County Judges Donna Klaeger of Burnet, Jerry Bearden of Mason, Wayne Boultinghouse of Lampasas and County Commissioner James Sultemeier of Blanco.
Senator Cornyn told the guests that he wanted to hear which economic issues were most pressing to each, and listened carefully as they resp ...

Amanda Lopez, who probably thinks, whether you’re going to the store or school or the gazebo, the distance is either 400 meters or 800. She’s run those races, it seems, more times than Denise has sold burritos, and she picked up two silver medals in the sprints, April 1, in the Heart of Texas Relays in Brady.
The 800 came first on a windy day at Bulldogs Stadium, and Lopez was third on the backstretch of the second and final lap.

Quarter-Century Mark Falls!
Erik Forrister was simply two strides beyond sensational, and Marcos Vallejo salvaged his day late at night at a memorable 64th annual Heart of Texas Relays in Brady, April 1.
“That kick of Erik’s was crazy,” Burnet’s Logan Neighbor, the runner-up, said about his neighbor to the west.
What the Llano senior did, as part of his high school farewell tour along the tracks of central Texas, was blister the wind-plagued 3200 meters in a time of 10 minutes, 4.9 ...

The comeback was valiant. The effort was superb. “No Quit” was awakened from the thesaurus. “It’s not over till… was recalled for not the last time. It was memorable even in defeat. And an 8-7, eight-inning setback it was—to Burnet—of course. Do these losses ever occur against Austin High?
“It was like a heavyweight fight,” Llano head coach Brad Harman said, “as two equally-matched teams were throwing punches, but we never h ...

There was trouble with one rival last week, but on the first day of April, the Lady Jackets were not fooled by Brady, and Llano belted the Bulldogs 16-6.
“This one boosted our confidence,” shortstop Teri Bedard said. “When you win like this it helps us play more as a team in the future.”
The Jackets didn’t look too far into the future in their non-district duel with Brady.

The start couldn’t have been much more promising, and the end was awfully good, too, but the other six innings were nosedives—Burnet scoring about as often as UConn wins by 40, and Llano squandering chances to stay close. The Lady Dawgs, March 30, downed the Lady Jackets 11-7 on the sparkling new softball diamond between the old high school and new one.
“We had plenty of opportunities,” head coach Brian Cottle said, “but we did not come through with clutc ...

QBs’ Big Stats a Big Deal?
Quarterbacks Colt McCoy and Sam Bradford recently were the stars of Pro Day. This is where NFL scouts and coaches, who don’t watch football on Saturdays because they’re so busy preparing for an offense that’s either going to hand off to the tailback or pass to one of five receivers, get to see if Colt and Sam can throw the ball.
Both of these guys are coming off injuries.

Llano County was in its Easter finest last weekend for sure, and the next week or two should be some of the best wildflower viewing we’ve had in quite some time. Seven straight months of above-average rainfall have brought out the bluebonnets in numbers I don’t think I have ever seen before, and they are interspersed with a variety of red, yellow, white, pink and orange flowers (check out the Indian Paintbrushes at Ken and Lillian Sullivan’s place on Old Spanish Trail in Bu ...

More than one hundred and forty years ago, in the days before barbed wire fences, John Oatman Jr. chose a fairly smooth and open spot on the south bank of the Llano River to build cattle pens for his own western-style “stock brokerage” business. Here he would buy, hold and sell herds of cattle for those who wished to drive them “up the trail” to markets in the north.
As the country became more civilized, the spot became the home of Isaiah Robinson, who used it ...
