Monday night’s school board included honors for state Color Guard competitors and a number of routine business items, but the main event was a spirited continuation of the debate on the CSCOPE curriculum. The meeting opened with a presentation to Felicia Patterson (who took first place in the state color guard Rifle Solo competition) and Gwen Popejoy, who placed second in Sabre Solo).
Just when you thought it was safe to tuck that voter registration card back into your wallet, another round of participatory democracy is launching for Llano County voters. Early voting begins Monday, April 26 in four Llano County elections. Three of the seven positions on the Llano Independent School District Board of Trustees are up for election this year, but only one position has a contested race.
Mayor Mike Reagor opened the city council meeting Monday night with a proclamation designating May 7 & 8 as “Relay for Life Days” in Llano. The city has a team organized to participate in the event, which raises money for cancer research, and encourages all interested citizens to participate in this year’s relay.
Feral hogs are becoming more and more of a problem in Llano County and surrounding counties. Are you tired of fixing fences, replanting fields, repairing water troughs, losing baby calves, fawns, lambs, and kids? Experts say that to control the hog population, 70% have to be harvested each year. To my knowledge, we are not making that mark, so the hog population is growing out of control.
The American Youth Policy Forum (AYPF) in Washington, D.C., is planning to bring a group of approximately 20 state policymakers to Austin on May 10-11, 2010, for a fact-finding trip focusing on Promoting College and Career-readiness for English Language Learners (ELL). The AYPF is a nonprofit organization that provides professional development and learning opportunities for policymakers at the state and federal levels on issues related to education, workforce development, and youth de ...

The Llano High School Yellow Jacket Symphonic Band completed the 2009-2010 UIL competition year by earning its twenty-second consecutive UIL Sweepstakes Award at the Region VII Concert and Sight-Reading Contest. The Llano Bands and Band Boosters hosted 33 high school and junior high bands during the two-day competition on April 14 and 15.
Yes, yes, the distance guys each won a gold and a silver at the 8-3A District Track Meet, April 14-15, and we’ve got plenty to say about them, but let’s catch up with the speedsters, who aren’t so easy to catch up with. Charlie Durham, who figures his glove and bat might slow him down, left those in the car, and he motored his way past Burnet’s Joe Brown on the anchor leg of the 4x200-meter relay.
The search is almost over for one Llano High School basketball coach, while questions are outnumbering answers for another. The Llano News has learned that the committee, headed by athletic director David Yeager, has interviewed nine of about 50 applicants for Shannon Taylor’s job. Taylor was reassigned recently, which translates to, he can return as biology teacher and freshman football coach, but he won’t be back as head coach of the varsity basketball team.
“Rain, rain, don’t go away,” was the cry of Llano’s Terry Wootan and trainer Heath Reed, April 17, in Oklahoma City. Wootan’s quarter horse, Llano Teller, gave no quarter in a sensational duel at the wire and won the $596,000 Remington Park Futurity. The two-year-old Teller, it turns out, is quite a mudder, so soften the track as much as you like.
This past week Llano High School hosted 34 area high school and middle school bands for Contest and Sight reading. Each band plays three songs they have practiced, and then plays a new piece of music they haven’t seen before. The bands are rated on how well they play in both sections of the contest. The Llano Varsity Band got Sweepstakes by obtaining a 1 from all three judges in contest and three judges in sight reading.

Olivia Hutto had 50 meters to turn a bad 50 meters into a dash to Lubbock. Allie Rostron ran the 200 of her life, and Amanda Lopez posted her best-ever in the 400. A couple of throwers, not built like throwers, tossed their metals into the region ring, and all of the aforementioned emerged from the 8-3A District Track and Field Meet with credentials to take the next step or steps.
Best Time has come for Relay Team
It almost didn’t seem like a track meet. It was like one youngster went to one house, another to the next-door neighbor, and they rounded up guys to run and jump and throw against each other. Not that this is done very often, but three-team meets aren’t the norm, either. Here they were, though: Llano and Fredericksburg knocked on Marble Falls’ door and said, “We’re here to play a little track—in your yard, okay?” Okay. Cara Mack opened ...
Playoffs Very Possible, but
This is the time to peak, coaches say, and fans are smart enough to add, “Well, sure, it’s almost playoffs, get it in gear!” All well and good, to use an old-timer’s phrase, which is fine, because an old-timer is using it. There’s a minor problem on the horizon: the Lady Jacket softball team is plunging, not peaking; amazingly, postseason is still a possibility, but right now democratic congressmen seem to have a brighter future. The trouble began ...

“My name is John, and I am a photoholic.” I’ve never actually been to a meeting of Photoholics Anonymous, but that’s pretty much the way I “picture” it (a little photoholic humor there!). My problem is, that after twelve years of taking pictures almost everywhere I go, I just can’t seem to help myself; in fact, taking pictures has become almost a way to justify my existence (or at least to justify my presence anywhere I go), and the low-cost convenie ...

The old “Red Top Jail” is one of Llano’s greatest historic treasures, and one of the most dramatic remaining evidences of the boom town that exploded out of the “wild, wild west” in the early 1890s. But to Crime Stoppers Coordinator Janie Prew, the Llano County Jail was also a wedding chapel, a workplace and a home. Janie married Ken Rhoades, whose sister and brother-in-law (Ben and Betty Graham) were the jailers, in 1970.
