News

Unofficial results were posted Saturday night for city, school and Municipal Utility Department #1 elections, but election officials are still waiting for possible overseas ballots to come in before certifying an official count. Incumbent alderman Mike Hazel led among five city council candidates with 256 votes, and seems assured of retaining his seat on the city council.
Countywide market values rise slightly
No news may be good news for property tax payers. If you own property in Llano County and did not receive a notice of appraised value in the past week, then your property has not significantly increased in value, and your tax liability will not increase for 2010. The bad news, of course, is that your property has not increased in value in the past year. Llano Central Appraisal District (LCAD) mailed over 12,000 notices of appraised values to owners whose property had increased in valu ...

HARKER HEIGHTS— Heartbreaking. That’s a word I’m allowed to use once every 16 months, so, since I haven’t used it since the 20-19 football loss in 2003 to Liberty Hill, and Nebraska loaned it to me following the Big 12 championship game in December, and a Cowboys’ messenger is waiting to take it to Irving, I’m ready to use it now. China Spring ousted the baseball Jackets from the playoffs in the bidistrict round, two games to one.
State Meet, May 14-15
Okay, where was I? Oh, yes, in Lubbock, and, by Western Union, I let Llano News’ readers know a week ago that Scott Shaffer, May 3, had qualified for the State Meet in the pole vault by finishing second in the Region I competition at Texas Tech. Erik Forrister also earned a trip to Austin with a sensational runner-up performance in the 3200-meter race.
In a report in the same area code as this one concerns Llano High School state qualifiers in track and field, but there were other stories of note which were born in Lubbock at the Region I Meet. The Jacket boys’ team finished a most impressive sixth out of 41 schools.

Editorials

Last week was the week I was going to make some real progress on the summer issue of the Texas Hill Country magazine. It didn’t happen. Don’t worry; I’ve made the story list, done the interviews and taken the pictures to fill another magazine. It’s getting the rest of the stories written, pictures formatted and pages put together that’s looming like a mountain in front of me right now.

It’s been 25 years now since Bryan Miiller went into business in Llano. Fresh out of Texas A&M in 1985, he purchased the old Llano Frozen Lockers Company at 608 East Public Square, from Vernon and Irene West, who had owned it since the early 1960s (the 1892 building had previously served as a nightclub and Coca-Cola bottling plant). Armed Forces Day is celebrated each year on the 3rd Saturday in May.
