The school board canvassed votes and administered the oath of office to two of the three newly re-elected trustees at Monday evening’s meeting. Board President Ronnie Rudd, who ran unopposed, was not able to attend the meeting. Board Secretary Becky Robinson, who out-polled challenger Brad McCasland 701 to 437, and John Moran, who also ran unopposed, were sworn in Monday evening.

Officers from the Llano Police Department were dispatched to 1005A Pittsburg Ave last Sunday afternoon to investigate the report of an assault. Upon arrival, they found that 24-year-old Gena Rae Marie Hutson had cut her mother’s throat with a lock-blade type knife. The Llano City Council met twice within the last week: a special meeting was held last Friday morning to canvass votes and swear in the winners of the May 8 election, and a regular meeting was held on Monday evening.

The head coach of the Gatesville Lady basketball Hornets is the new head coach of the Lady Jackets. She’s Megan Simoneau, who was at Gatesville for three years, and she led the Hornets to the playoffs twice. This past season her team was 10-0 in district.
“I was looking for a change,” Simoneau said May 18 not long after she had accepted the offer of Llano High athletic director David Yeager.

His basketball wasn’t so impressive, but just about everything else was for Bram Berkelmans, a Llano High School foreign-exchange student from the Netherlands. Actually, even his basketball was okay for someone who had never played before.
And, he showed what he could do on a tennis court. Bram teamed with Ashley Schroeder, and the pair won the mixed-doubles’ championship in district 8-3A.

They played a pretty good football game—for girls, that is. Whoops! That’s the wrong thing to say! And, it was the lead!
Lead Two: Considering the running of Hurryin’ Hutto, Strong-willed Stevenson, and Raise-a-Ruckus Rucker; the passing of “I told him to dump the Slot-T” Yeager; the two-way play of no-hesitation Hernandez; and the receiving of assiduous Allie and highlight Libby, the Powder Puff show was superb.

LHS at State Championships
AUSTIN--One’s been here forever, the other for not quite two years, and now both are leaving Llano High School with a convincing, role-model exit message. For their farewell assignment, they delivered outstanding performances on the grandest stage: the State Championships. Erik Forrister, on the morning of May 14, finished fourth among the best eight in Texas, in the Class-3A 3200-meter race.

Last week was a very special week (at least for me) at The Llano News. Even though I had only a limited part in the special Armed Forces insert, I was proud to have it in the paper, and I was proud to see that others enjoyed it, too. Thanks so much to Tommi Myers for supplying the information!

Dr. Donald Ray Shepherd died Sunday, May 16 2010, at his home in Tow. He was born on Sept. 7, 1935 in Pampa, the son of Ray and Lorene Shepherd.
Don graduated from Denison High School in 1954 and cum laude from Austin College in Sherman in 1958. He married Elizabeth Poole Shepherd in Bay City in 1958.

Mary Hefner, age 89, of Llano passed away on May 13, 2010. She was born in Llano on Nov. 14, 1920. She was the daughter of Gus and Hulda Dahl. She was a homemaker for most of her life. A member of the Pentecostal Church and she enjoyed gardening and visiting with her friends.
She is survived by her son Delbert Kleen of Llano, and several nieces and nephews.

Tad Cody Taylor, 23 years of age died at his parents residence in Granite Shoals on May 15, 2010. A native of Montogomery, Ala. he was the youngest son of Terry and Sherry Giles. Taylor was born on May 6, 1987. Tad had attended college and was a musician playing and writing music was his greatest passion.

Troy Clyde Galyean, 75 years of age died at his residence in Kingsland on May 14, 2010. A native of Cee Vee he was born on Oct. 13, 1934 to Lee C. and Verbon Parker Galyean. After his schooling he worked at various jobs but enjoyed being a carpenter most of his adult life.

Warren Sanderford, age 57 of Austin formerly of Highland Haven passed away Saturday, May 8, 2010. He was born June 13, 1952 to LaVerne and Warren Sanderford, Sr., in Waco. Warren was a member of the Marble Falls First Baptist Church.
Survivors include his sister, Susan Everman and husband Jerry of Highland Haven; brother, Robert M.

Willie G. Fiedler, of Castell passed away Friday, May 14, 2010 at the age of 84 surrounded by his family. He was born in Gillespie County Sept. 18, 1925 to Emma (McDonald) and Willie Fiedler. He married Laquita “Deedee” Vierus August 23, 1954 in Kerrville. Willie was of the Methodist faith and was a member of Trinity Methodist Church Castell.

Charles Haynes was born on September 12, 1814, in Brattleboro, Vermont. Orphaned at an early age, he went to New York City, where he learned the trade of a mechanic. As a 22-year-old working in Cincinnati, he enlisted in the Texas army at a recruiting station set up by an emissary of General Sam Houston.

The Llano County Armed Forces Day Rally 2010 was a wonderful event! The rain forced us to abandon plans for an outdoor event on the Courthouse Square, but the City of Llano graciously offered the Lan-Tex Theater for the event. From the posting of the colors down to the closing prayer, it was a special tribute to every man and woman serving our country, with a special acknowledgement of the 73 who are from Llano County.

This year’s Llano County Beef & Range Field Day is set for Tuesday, June 1, 2010. Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. at the Llano County Community Center on Ranch Road 152, about 1.7 miles west of Llano. Coffee and donuts will be served at this time.
The morning session will be 3 45-minute rotations.

Llano Girl Scout Cadette Troop 1058 is proud to announce the completion of their Girl Scout Silver Awards. The Silver Award is the highest level award that Cadette Girl Scouts are able to achieve. The girls have worked for 2 years to earn numerous Interest Projects, Studio 2B awards, and Leadership and Challenge Awards, which all led up to the Silver Award project.

Ten new officers of the Llano Woman’s Culture Club were installed at the May 10 meeting. Officers for the prior club year were recognized and given the thanks of the club for their service. The theme of this year’s installation was spices, with a few herbs thrown in for extra flavor, and with a bit of folklore.

A team of experts in the Main Street revitalization process will visit Llano on June 2 and 3 to help the city and its Main Street Program with continuing efforts to enhance the community’s real and unique history and its special historic places. Through the visit, guidance will be provided for enhancing local downtown revitalization efforts and historic preservation activities.

Plans for the 5th annual Texas Proud Festival are in high gear! We have several new events this year including a sanctioned CASI chili cook-off - this means a “serious” competition where participants are trying to accumulate points to qualify for the Terilingua competition.
We are thinking of extending the cook-off to include some of our local businesses to vie for a “Best of Llano Chili Cooker”.

The first Tea Party meeting in Llano will take place on Thursday, May 27, 6pm. The meeting will be held at Inman’s Kitchen BBQ, 809 W. Young Street in Llano.
This month’s guest speaker is the Fredericksburg Tea Party steering committee, who will discuss the Tea Party mission, voter education and citizen activism.
