Five of ten statewide Democratic candidates made appearances at Robinson Park in Llano, at the “Hill Country Blowout” organized in large part by Bob and Lynda Gammage of Llano. The Texas Proud Festival last weekend was a big success, filling the downtown area (and local hotels) with cheerful visitors on a beautiful weekend in Llano. Three years ago she was a freshman, and she’s about to be a freshman again. All those hours in the gym since the sixth grade, and camps in Oregon, North Carolina, Tennessee, and College Station. The long roads and hardwoods lead to McMurry, and Ashley Schroeder will play basketball for the Abilene school in the fall.
“It won’t be as big a transition as it might be at a bigger college,” Schroeder said May 25, the day she signed her letter-of-intent to go there.

There’s been a lot of talk recently concerning colleges switching conferences. Texas has been mentioned for just about every league but the MSL. I think I can put a stop to all of this with a few alternatives involving your favorite schools.

The City of Llano is accepting sealed bids for street improvements. Work is to consist of 18,000 square yards of cement stabilization reclamation to an eight inch depth with a two course surface treatment finish. Fred L. Pickett, Jr, 79, formerly of Llano, passed away on May 24, 2010 at his home in Lubbock. Fred was born in Corder, Mo. on July 26, 1930 to his loving parents, Dr. Fred L. Pickett, Sr. and Virginia Elisabeth Pickett. He was their only son and their pride and joy.

Lillie Craven, age 79 of Llano passed away Monday, May 24, 2010. She was born to Essie (Tyler) and Charles Justis in Melvin July 24, 1930. She married Nellum Leon Craven June 29, 1946 in San Saba.
She was a member of Pittsburg Avenue Baptist Church and a local business owner.

Mae Lewis was born in Hayti, Mo. on Jan. 26, 1916 and passed away on Saturday, May 29, 2010 at the age of 94. Growing up, she lived in Missouri, Arkansas, and Louisiana before moving to McCamey while in high school. While there she met and married Ted M. Lewis in 1935.

Maebell Dansby Simpson, age 90, passed away on Monday, May 24, 2010. She was born Oct. 21, 1919 in Bangs to Mamie (Shaw) and Charles Earl Fitzgerald. She married Garland Lee Dansby, M.D. on Feb. 10, 1942 and moved with him to Llano in 1953; he preceded her in death on July 2, 1981.

Marvin S. Light, age 80 of Burnet passed away Sunday May 30, 2010 after extended illness. He was born in the Six Mile community of Llano County on Feb. 7, 1930 to Frank Light and Mary Alice (Moss) Light. Except for a short time in the military and work in west Texas oil fields as a welder he was a lifelong resident of Llano and Burnet counties.

Joe Randerson is a charter member of what Tom Brokaw so famously calls “The Greatest Generation.” You’d never guess his age if you just happened to see him riding by on his motorcycle, but he was born around 1922, and grew up during the depression on an 80-acre farm about five miles south of the capitol building (a farm long since engulfed by the spreading city of Austin.

The Llano County Rodeo and Parade are coming out of the chute. Sponsored by the Llano Chamber of Commerce, the rodeo will be held Friday and Saturday nights, June 5-6, at 8:00 pm with dances to follow. “Kristen Kelly & the Modern Day Drifters” will perform Friday, Bo Cox on Saturday night.
The parade, on this 75th annual weekend tradition, will be held, June 5th, at 10:00 am.

Registration for the 2010 Little Miss Sparkle Pageant will be held at the courthouse gazebo on Saturday, June 15th from 5:00 until 6:30.
The Miss Sparkle Pageant will be holding their first meeting on Thursday, June 17th at the Lan-Tex Theatre at 6pm. This will be a registration and information meeting.
