The Llano County Commissioners Court voted unanimously at their Monday morning meeting to lift the burn ban that had been in effect for the last two weeks. A budget presentation by City Manager Finley deGraffenried dominated last week’s city council meeting (held on Tuesday because of the Independence Day holiday on Monday). Local efforts to obtain a delay in the adoption of new flood plain mapping have gained some impressive support. In a letter to FEMA dated July 7, 2010, U.S. Senators Kay Bailey Hutchison and John Cornyn and U.S. Representative Mike Conaway asked FEMA for a “period up to two years” to allow time for “additional studies to be funded and conducted.” The letter explained the reason for the requested delay.
Llano’s historic Badu House has been purchased by a couple from Midland, who plan to use the upstairs as a bed-and-breakfast and the downstairs as a wine bar. The Llano High School Hall of Fame Nominating Committee has scheduled its initial meeting to consider nominations for 2010 induction into the Llano High School Hall of Fame. The meeting will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 15 at the O. Henry Building. Each year this committee is tasked with reviewing nominations submitted on behalf of possible inductees and selecting nominees to recommend to the Hall of Fame Board of Directors.

I don’t know how many of my readers have ever watched and listened to a Danny Brooks performance; I’m betting that anyone who ever paid attention will remember the occasion clearly. He’s a Canadian blues artist, rare enough in itself; but the thing that caught my attention was the unmistakable gospel message in many of his songs.

Hershal James Lee Maxwell, 82, of Kingsland passed away July 4, 2010. He was born to Johnnie Jackson and Willie Pearl (Hewett) Maxwell on July 3, 1928 in Burnet County. He proudly served his country in the Untied States Army. He loved to deer hunt, fish and enjoyed working in his garden. He is survived by his nieces, Carolyn Maxwell McMillian, of Conroe, Michelle Maxwell Boeck, San Antonio, nephew William Glenn Maxwell, of Conroe, six great nephews and nieces, and eight great-g ...

Norman Livingston was born in Hamilton County, where his parents had a farm on the Leon River, on November 16, 1925. Norman was one of seven children, all of whom worked on the farm; he remembers that they had “horses all over the place,” so when his father traded 21 horses for a J.I.

Community News

Carmen and Howard Jenkel’s son,Max is home from the Marines. He has served his four years. Welcome Home Max and thank you..... The Cherokee Baptist Youth spent last week at camp in Brownwood. They reported having a great time... The Cherokee Fourth of July Celebration was a great success. The fireworks were beautiful. We are happy to report that Melanie Lehrer had a double lung transplant in San Antonio last week.
Singer-songwriter, Danny Brooks is in need of immediate quintuple bypass heart surgery. A “kick-off” benefit drive will be held at Fuel Coffee House at 7 pm on Saturday, July 17. A donation will be taken up during the Open Mic show with proceeds going to the Danny Brooks family. A raffle will be held with items donated by Sweet Mesquite, One Trick Pony and Tres Rios Silver.
The Llano 4-H Youth Board will be hosting a Hunter Education Training Course on July 22-23 at the Llano County Extension Office. The first day of training will be from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and the second day will be from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. Lunch will be on your own; please feel free to bring a sack lunch or go to town for lunch.
Frances Niles, a Llano teacher for 22 years, passed the Llano Fine Arts Gallery on her way to work every day and promised herself that she would join the Llano Fine Arts Guild when she retired. True to her word, she joined in 1986 and is now one of the longest serving members of the Art Guild.
Plans are underway for the Llano County Heritage Festival this fall. This year the event will be held October 16 and 17. The Llano River Chuck Wagon Cook-off will be at that time in Badu Park. A very special attraction this year will be Don Edwards, composer, balladeer, and Cowboy Hall of Famer.
Jessica Smarr, Llano County 4-H’er, was awarded a 2010 Texas 4-H Opportunity Scholarship in the amount of $15,000, sponsored by Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.The scholarship was one of 223 totaling almost $2.2 million awarded by the Texas 4-H Youth Development Foundation during the 2010 Opportunity Awards Ceremony June 11 in Bryan’s Brazos County Exposition Center.
The Star Republican Women Club (formerly South Llano County Republican Women) is pleased to announce their first ever summer fundraiser to be held on Thursday, July 22, 4:30 until 6:30 p.m., at the Riverbend Fine Art Gallery. Riverbend Fine Art Gallery is located at 710 1st Street in Marble Falls.
Eighteen Llano County 4-H members participated in State 4-H Roundup at College Station, June 7-11, 2010. Contests were held on or near the campus of Texas A&M University. The Nutrition Quiz Bowl Team, consisting of Woody Byrnes, Amy Center, and Jessica Smarr, placed first. The team was coached by Marilyn Hale. Jacey Smathers and Mary Cinek placed third with their Safety Educational Presentation on the dangers of distracted driving.
Hill Country Cat Control is sponsoring THE A TEAM movie at the LanTex this Friday night, July 16 at 7:30 and Saturday, July 17 at 4:30 and 7:30 p.m. The movie is based on the popular 1980’s TV series by the same name. Four soldiers serving in Iraq are sent on a mission to recover missing 100 plates that were used to print a billion dollars.
The Tow Community met on July 8, for their monthly meeting. Among the items discussed was a Homemade Ice Cream Chill-Out to be held on Saturday, August 14. This spring, participating Tractor Supply Company stores across Texas raised almost $29,000 for Texas 4-H programs through their Paper Clover Campaign, said a Texas 4-H official. Jim Reeves, College Station-based Texas 4-H Youth Development Foundation executive director, said the company’s Texas stores were responsible for netting almost 10 percent of the more than $300,000 raised nationally. 4-H is the youth program of the Texas AgriLife Extension Service.
