A well-intentioned effort to streamline county government backfired last Wednesday when four consecutive meetings of the Floodplain Community Panel were adjourned without any discussion or action. After the commissioners court had voted on Monday to remove Floodplain Administrator Ron Moore from the three-member panel (Horseshoe Bay engineer Preston Mason and the commissioner of each issue’s originating precinct were the other two members), the county’s legal advisor (Attorney Ch ...
Captain Jason Holbrook, a native of Burnet, was killed Thursday when the vehicle in which he was riding struck an improvised explosive device (IED) in Tsagay, Afghanistan. Also killed was Staff Sgt. Two of the four district campuses and the district as a whole received the state’s top “Exemplary” rating. Llano elementary School and Llano Junior High School were both rated Exemplary, while Packsaddle Elementary School and Llano High School were rated next-best “Recognized.” The Exemplary rating has long been one of the district’s most coveted goals. But the undeniably good news is somewhat clouded by a controversy which has surrounded the Texas ...
Budget workshop set for August 12 at 4:00 p.m.
In a short and generally upbeat meeting Monday night, Llano’s city council honored a ten-year employee, approved the consent agenda and bids for employee insurance, gave preliminary approval to the annexation of Lee and Virginia Duncan’s property on the west edge of the city and approved a grant of $3,000 from the hotel/motel tax to advertise the Heritage Days events, including the chuckwagon cook-off and a ranch rodeo. The most serious moment of the meeting came when coun ...

Sports

The Jacket is a Lumberjack
The last game Andrew Ratliff played was against Bridgeport. The next one he plays will be against Texas A&M. The 2009 Llano High graduate is a member of the Stephen F. Austin offensive line, and the Lumberjacks open the 2010 season at Kyle Field, September 4. “Oh, I’m excited about that,” Ratliff said by phone from Nacogdoches.
First Semester Schedule on Gridiron
Bulletin! You don’t have to go to any Llano High football games this season—head coach David Yeager is going to tell you all about all of them right now. Well, not exactly. He’s going to preview the games. Pardon my confusion. At Comanche, Aug. 27 The Class-2A Indians were a good-looking 9-3 last year, winning one playoff game and losing one.

Editorials

I don’t know how many of my readers knew Jason Holbrook. I met him once or twice when he was in high school in Burnet, then did a story for the Burnet Bulletin when he was accepted into West Point. He didn’t have an easy time there, and was seriously considering quitting during his second year there.

Looking for an interesting year that wasn’t during World War II, I decided to see what was happening in Llano the year that I graduated from high school. That was 1974, but when I looked at the first issue of The Llano News that year, I realized that I’d first have to write a little about 1973. That’s because the whole first issue was a recap of the previous year’s events, and the whole front page was covered with photos from 1973.
