“I’m elated!” said Superintendent Dennis Hill, in a Monday interview about the recent “Exemplary” rating earned by Llano ISD. “These numbers are phenomenal.” His reaction mirrored that of Assistant Superintendent Tim Glover, who told The Llano News last Wednesday that “I’m very proud as an administrator and as a parent.

The Llano City Council held a special meeting Monday night to consider a $500 grant from Hotel Occupancy Tax funds for advertising Llano’s “Trail of the Deer” exhibit, which has placed five beautifully painted life-size deer at different locations around town. At the Summer meeting of the Llano Uplift Chapter of DAR Regent Peggy Munson, Chaplain Sue Langley & Membership Co-Chairman Georgi Brochstein welcomed Sarah Hayes of Cedar Park, Bitsey Russell of Llano & Ellen Spiller of Marble Falls into membership. These ladies along with 5 others were approved for membership in July by NSDAR.

Oh, what a difference a year does not make. During the previous August, all the talk at Baylor concerned quarterback Robert Griffin. 12 months later Griffin remains the guy; he proved it in the 2009 season by playing just three games. A severe knee injury ended his campaign before September turned into October, and the Bears turned a 2-1 record into 4-8 numbers. Griffin, from Copperas Cove, connected on 60% of his passes as a freshman in 2008.
You can call them The Young Lions, The New Guard, The Salad Days’ Seven, or The Whiz Kids if you’re the opposite of being a kid. I’m not sure whether to try to blame my magazine, or Hammerfest, the commissioners court, the city council, the school administrators or my daughter, Amanda (they all took quite a bit of my time this past week), but I got a long way behind schedule, and never did find time to do a history column.

Carrie L. Browne resident of Wimberley passed away July 30, 2010, at the age of 70. She was born November 2, 1939, in Ponca City, Okla.to Hazel Whipple and Joseph Hall. Carrie was long time resident of Houston until retiring to Llano in 1994. She was a wonderful and loving mother, wife and grandmother who nurtured all of us. George Eldridge Harlan, Sr., 88, of Tow, formerly of Austin, passed away August 5, 2010. He was born to William Steve and Martha Emily (Smith) Harlan on June 10, 1922 in Junction, Texas. Mr. Harlan grew up in Austin, Bee Cave, and Woodlake where he was active in Future Farmers of America (FFA) in School.

Margaret Fern Rhodes Winfrey passed away Sunday, August 8, 2010, in Llano, Texas, with her family by her side. She was born on October 14, 1912 in Ballinger, Texas to Henry and Maude Irene Buchanan Rhodes; she was two months shy of her 98th birthday when she died. The Rhodes moved to Brady, Texas, where Margaret attended Brady schools and where, while attending Brady High School, she met Crawford Winfrey.

Mildred Dean Goble of Llano passed away August 9, 2010 at the age of 86 years old. She was born April 9, 1924 in Lampasas to Hettie Merle (Reeves) and Thomas Jefferson Benoist. Mildred was a homemaker and loved to fish and dance. She moved to the area eight years ago coming from Mathis, Texas. Nell (Wolaver) Bauman, age 83 of Llano, passed away Friday, August 6, 2010. She was born on March 2, 1927 in Ellis County to Alice Blanche and Sam Wolaver. Nell married Ross Bauman on February 18, 1950 in Fort Worth. She graduated from Texas Christian University with her Bachelors Degree. Nell was a school teacher with Llano Independent School District and retired after over 35 years of service.

Wilma G. Horne of Llano, Texas, passed away August 7, 2010 at the age of 87 years old. She was born Sept. 7, 1922 in Llano to Nora Ethel (Myers) and Ernest Duncan. She married James Doyle (J.D.) Horne on January 25, 1947 in Fredericksburg. She was a homemaker, seamstress, and she loved and cared for homeless animals of all kinds.
