At the Monday Commissioner’s Court meeting, two items on the agenda were rejected following tense negotiations.
The first, a request to ratify an application that had been sent to Homeland Security for a grant for FY 2012, estimated to be $74,020 if awarded and with no local match to the county, died for lack of a majority vote.
The grant, had it been awarded, was to go to the purchase of software that would enhance communication for officers while on patrol.

Realignment, which happens twice as much as the Olympics, grabs the public school spotlight Thursday, February 2. Unlike Groundhog Day, the results won’t govern for just six weeks, but for two years.
The University Interscholastic League—every other February—tells Texas schools what their classification is—1A to 5A according to enrollment—and in what district they will be for sports and academic contests.

MARBLE FALLS—One of the most successful coaches in Texas high school football history is taking over a program that has run a losing race with success for close to 15 years.
Todd Dodge is the new head coach of the Marble Falls Mustangs. The former UT quarterback (1982-85) won four state championships at Southlake Carroll (Metroplex), 2002-2006.

There were nasty negatives in the Llano basketball boys’ 58-43 loss to Lampasas, but positives, too, in this second district game, January 17. One plus was it was a big improvement over a 65-34 defeat to the Badgers in a tournament game in San Saba in early December.
“Our energy level was outstanding,” said head coach Keith Allen, “but we have to do a better job of making shots down the stretch.”
That was not the case in the first half.

Marcos Vallejo, the best middle-distance runner in Llano High School history, will have to gallop thousands of meters to wind up at his collegiate destination. He will soon sign a letter-of-intent to accept a scholarship to attend Texas Tech. Marcos will trade in his 3A designation for the Big 12.
“I’m really excited,” Marcos said before workout, Monday, January 23.

You check out the score, and it appears to be a decent showing against Lampasas, but yet another loss, in what’s been a tough journey (6-18) for the Lady Jackets. I don’t think there’s much information here between the lines, but the lines themselves will say, Llano made a superb comeback and defined the phrase, “never give up.”
“We finally woke up!” screamed head coach Daryl Friedrich, competing with the excellent Black and Orange band betwee ...

LIBERTY HILL—In 1775, American patriot Patrick Henry was quoted in The Llano News, or one of its predecessors, as saying, “Give me liberty or give me death.” The Jacket girls and boys must have thought, January 20, 237 years later, they got both. The Lady Panthers pulverized Llano 71-18 and 32 basketball minutes later, the Boys from the Hill reached the century mark in a 100-34 punishment.

LIBERTY HILL—100. It is one of the most well-known numbers in American arithmetic. It’s not so good in golf but great in school. It’s too much fever and too many heartbeats, but the percentile guys love it. It’s a lousy batting average, but it’s a heck of a gain on the gridiron.

Warm music floats around the room, mixing with the lively aroma of fresh coffee, as crowds of people lounge peacefully among the audience. The age of the spectators has infinite range, with the youthful laughter of children chasing one another around the stage merging seamlessly with the wise tones of the building’s mature fans.

Previous articles have laid the groundwork for a clearer understanding of an historical event that occurred in downtown Llano in June, 1882, known as the Carter-Coggin Feud. As already indicated, most of what has been written and said about this event is riddled with many unanswered questions and a lot of highly disputable innuendos and contradictions about not only what happened on that day, but also who was involved and why problems arose in the first place.

Dear Editor,
Being eighty nine years old, I can remember happenings at the LanTex Theater in the mid to late thirties.
At that time, it was owned and operated by a man and wife named Garner. She worked in the ticket booth, while he managed the finances and made decisions as to what movies to run.
They showed Westerns on Saturdays with a 10-chapter serial.
