Jacket Baseball

Few of Llano’s baseball faithful can remember that last time the Jackets 10-run-ruled Wimberley. The smiles on the faces of fans and parents indicated this one will not soon be forgotten. In the District 25-3A open, the Jackets shelled Wimberley, 13-2, scoring all 13 runs in the first three innings. Friday, Llano did the same to Ingram in five innings, winning 13-3 and improving to 2-0 in league play. Wimberley put four pitchers on the mound trying to cool Llano’s warm bats but it was to no avail. Llano went through the lineup twice in the third inning and finished the game with nine hits. |

It’s the sign of a good team when the statistics aren’t quite satisfying enough, and these are the statistics: five runs in the first inning, a resounding 17 hits in the game, and a cake-walk, sweet-tasting, 11-1 softball conquest of Ingram, March 28. Geez, if THIS were disappointing, you wonder what the Warrior folks were thinking. “We started well-enough,” head coach Brian Cottle said, “but then we relaxed and lost focus, and you cannot do that until the game is over and the field is taken care of.” Cottle’s contingent did indeed take care of the basics with its first eight batters in the first inning. |

The Llano Jr. High boys had quite a successful evening at the Bandera Middle School Relays Friday, March 28. Both the 7th grade and 8th grade boys won first place in their respective divisions. Each team is very proud of their plaques that read “Bander Middle School Pre-District Relays Seventh/Eighth Grade Boys Champion.” The teams hope they can improve on their outstanding performance next week at the 25-3A District Track Meet held at Jacket Stadium Friday, April 4. |

It was double-or-nothing for several Llano track athletes, March 29, at the Bandera Bulldog Relays. Kallie Johanson won the shot put and discus; Lauren Parker said, “Just what exactly ARE these heavy metals?” And she went out and tossed them around before winning the 800-meter and 400-meter runs; and Cole Hoffman, the young man who prefers keeping to himself while running middle distances, would have galloped off into the sunset if there had been any sun, but he was content with blitzing the field (what else?) in the 3,200 meters and 1,600 meters. First on the podium: Johanson. |

It was “just” a softball game, played on a patch of ground, city folks might say was “out in the country,” but it was seven innings of pure athletic drama. Those in the leading roles stepped in to halt a threat that would have erased this entire paragraph, broke out of a slump to slam two crucial doubles, extend an on-base streak absolutely critical to the victory, and come through under pressure most likely never felt before, as the last man up, to send everyone home after the best of finishes: the last-chance rally that turns defeat into destiny’s decision. |
