Llano Fine Arts Gallery will host a demonstration by Jean Hensley, of Ballinger, at their May 5 meeting. Hensley, president of the Mid-West Texas Artist’s Guild in Ballinger, will be presenting a demo on painting with acrylics. She will include a history of acrylic painting and show examples of many of the possible techniques used in creating art with this versatile paint.

Linda Colvin was born and raised in Dallas. She earned a B. S.

Holly Ann (Halliburton) Dees, a 1999 Llano High School graduate, received the prestigious 2008 Outstanding Student Dental Hygienist in Texas Award. In February, the Texas Dental Hygienist’s Association held its annual convention at the Omni Hotel in Austin, where the award was presented to Dees.

Castell Community Club

Despite rains, rising creeks and a chilly April cold snap, close to 100 visitors turned out for an open house to celebrate the restoration of the old Castell School. Now the home of the Castell Community Club, the schoolhouse that dates to a one-room beginning in the late 1890s has been preserved in the last few years with about $110,000 of work top to bottom.

Early voting in local elections will end Tuesday and decisions will be made for the Llano City Council, City of Sunrise Beach Village City Commission and the Kingsland Municipal Utility District after election day ballots are cast May 10. Early voting for all three of those elections or for the areas included in Burnet Consolidated School District may be cast at the Llano County Library, 102 East Haynie from 7 a.

Obituaries

Clarence Earl Davis, 79, of Llano, passed away April 21 in San Angelo. He was born Sept. 16, 1928, to Grace Moore Davis and John Davis, of Ponotoc.

Mary Ellen Eifert, 63, of Kingsland, passed away April 23. She was born to Rudy and Sophia (Heywood) Stangel on January 8, 1945, in Fremont, Neb.

Fannie Jo Jones Howard, 77, of Kingsland went to be with her heavenly maker on April 28. She was the daughter of Henry Josiah and Elsie Lee (Bagby) Jones. She was born in Post on July 12, 1930, and grew up in Plainview.

Martha Freida Umfrid, 90, of Llano, passed away Wednesday, April 23, in Llano. She was born on December 19, 1917, to Alma (Hellbusch) and Max Jentsch in Wichita Falls.

Sports

Saturday, the Jackets watched a 4-0 lead turn into a 6-4 loss at the hands of Lorena in Killeen. The playoff tuneup game was a chance for the Jackets to work out some pitchers in anticipation to a best of three series this weekend against Luling.

Llano High School senior, Cole Hoffman, ran around the Javelina Stadium track in Kingsville a dozen times, April 25 and April 26, but his foes were the ones truly “running in circles,” as Hoffman raced off with a pair of gold medals at the Class-3A, Region IV track meet. The fastest young men from close to 40 schools had marvelous views of the back of Cole’s orange jersey.

There is something remarkably pure and perfect about the sound of cleats--and nothing else--in a dugout following a game, although calling such a painful loss a “game” seems almost unfair to the young men who truly battled for victory. The meeting of athletic shoe and concrete got no opposition from voices as the Llano baseball Jackets reflected for the first time--of many times to come--on a 10-9 anguish at Bandera, April 22.

Elections for officers of the Llano Athletic Booster Club will be held on Tuesday, May 13 at 5: 30 p. m.

Lee Gann retired recently as chief clerk of the Kingsland Post Office where he spent his entire postal career. “We’re sorry to see him retire after 27 years,” said Postmaster Steve Machacek.

Granite Shoals Police Chief J. P. Wilson remained in critical condition Tuesday following a motorcycle accident at midday Saturday on RR 1431 in Kingsland.

May 3 - Flashbacks, dance, 7: 30 p. m.

The Fine Arts Association of the Hill Country will host the First Annual Art Show on May 3 and 4. The public is invited to attend the show in Mason at the historic Lucia Holmes’ Guesthouse located on the southeast corner of the town square.

Llano County Judge Wayne Brascom presented county employee Ron Moore with the Floodplain Administrator of the Year Award. The award is made by the Texas Colorado Floodplain Coalition which represents cities and counties from Lampasas to Wharton on the Colorado River.

Burnet County Sheriff’s Office and Hill Country Area Crime Stoppers are asking for the public’s assistance for any information on a theft of 10 dirt bikes; 9 Hondas and 1 Yamaha, also taken were 10 motorcycles helmets sometime between the hours of 8: 30 p. m.

The Hill Country Railroad has decided to offer rides on The Gandy Dancer Express. The funny name has a very historical meaning.

Llano Elementary School has set Friday, May 9 as the date for this year’s Kindergarten Round-Up. This annual event will be held in the Kindergarten wing (south of the main elementary school building).

Hill Country Livestock Raisers Association will hold their annual banquet Saturday, May 3, 2008 at the Community Center in Llano. Featured speaker will be renowned cowboy poet and author Linda Kirkpatrick.

The Edwards Plateau Meat Goat Producers Association and the Llano County AgriLife Extension Service will be hosting a special program with Dr. Frank Craddock on May 8 at the Llano County Community Center (located approximately 3 miles west of Llano on RM 152) from 6: 30 p.
