We have had a rough week, losing our friends. I remember my Dad some years ago saying, “Son I’m losing all my friends.” When we get older this happens more and more as we all know. A passenger fell off a Carnival cruise ship last week near Tampa, but was rescued by one of the port’s pilot vessels.

The Friends of the Red Top Jail are hosting an art contest to benefit the jail restoration project. All art mediums will be accepted, including photography. The jail will be available to artists through September, 2009. Judging will be done and prizes awarded during the Heritage Festival in October. The historic jail will be the subject of all artwork; entry fee is $10.
Once again this month FUEL coffee house in Llano will present its Third Thursday “Songwriters in the Round.” Thursday, June 18th at 7:00 PM, host W.C. Jameson will take the stage along with his guests this month singer / songwriters Walt Wilkins, and Tina Mitchell-Wilkins. Walt Wilkins is considered by many to be one of Texas’ finest songwriters.
I am sorry we missed last week’s article, but we were in Tennessee. My mom, who was 94, went to Heaven last Sunday June 7th. I have been employed in many different types of work from Ford automobile assembly plant, finance company, department store, truck driver, refinery, grocery store, farming, just to name a few.
On June 8, 1912, a little girl named Opal was born to Jessie and Della Ratliff at the home of the little girl’s Grandma Moss near Lone Grove. As one of eleven children in this family, Opal learned the meaning and rewards of honest, hard work to help make ends meet. At the age of 20, Opal married Dea Holland.
Miss Lindsay Ann Haverlah and Mr. Lee Farr Alexander were united in holy matrimony on May 23, 2009 at Lutie Watkins Memorial United Methodist Church. The wedding was officiated by Brett Willis of Durango, Colorado. A reception followed at the Dabbs Railroad Hotel, located along the scenic Llano River. After a honeymoon trip to California, the couple will be at home in Farmington, New Mexico.

On Friday, March 27, the students of Llano Elementary have the unique opportunity to meet and hear authors Dave and Pat Sargent speak – for the final time. The Sargents’ are storytellers without equal and their talks are designed to be interesting and informative to grade school students and get them interested in books and reading. Through positive reinforcement, they teach young writers how to find their niche in the writing world.
Music and art will reign supreme in Marble Falls this Friday, Saturday and Sunday … and everyone’s invited to come “dance in the street” and “paint the town” and at The Bluebonnet Music and Fine Arts Festival. “The bluebonnets are blooming and the weather this weekend is supposed to be spectacular so we’d like to see everyone come out and have a good time.
This weekend, the LanTex will show the popular movie Taken that will benefit the Llano Master Gardeners. This group is very active in the community and has been responsible for so many beautification projects around town such as Pioneer Park, the County Clerk’s office, and the Llano Woman’s Culture Club Building.

A series of three classes for family history researchers begins Wednesday, March 18, from 10 a.m. to noon at the Kingsland Branch Library, presented by the Kingsland/Highland Lakes Genealogical Society (KGS). The sessions are open to everyone free of charge, with donations accepted for printed materials. Further classes are scheduled March 25 and April 1, with information for researchers at all levels.
