C. L. Yarbrough said it best for me in the dedication of the booklet he wrote for the Vanishing Texas River Cruise entitled CANYON OF THE EAGLES. Quoting him: “To the River People, who can never go home again.” Although the events leading up to this event happened almost a decade before I was born, its sentiments have played a vital role in my life as far back as I can remember.

The vastness of the State of Texas and abundant natural wildlife makes it a popular place to hunt many varmints that are available the year around. Varmint is a generalized term for animals that are widely regarded as pests in a specific area. Dear Editor,
Once again the LCRA is up to their old tricks. This time they are releasing water from Lake Buchanan under the pretense that the Windemere Oaks subdivision water intake cannot draw water from Lake Travis. Christmas is almost here; the hours are quickly counting down. It makes no difference if gifts from Santa are opened on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day, children are giddy with excitement as the anticipated time approaches. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt declared the date as one that would “live in infamy.” So far, the man has been correct, and his words will remain as such for many more years to come.

Several historical articles have been written recently about the outlaw known as Johnny Ringo, with mention of his closest associates. These men had become some of Ringo’s best friends, some who would remain so the rest of his life. A good close friend after he arrived in Central Texas appears to have been former Texas Ranger Scott Cooley.

Who says Black Friday has to be so dark? Avoid the lines, the crowds, pushing, shoving, waiting, wishing and wondering if you’ll get the item you desire after the trip to the big city. Let the local shops in Llano brighten your day. Save your time, energy, worries and gas and shop local.

When discussing the Indian situation in Llano County, people often state they are only interested in hearing romanticized versions about the Indians that are “politically correct.” Unfortunately, for an accurate account of the Indian involvement in the early settlement of our county, it doesn’t take much research to realize the Indians that met that criteria somehow bypassed our county.
